Kirk just misses his brother. He can't see him any other place than the Enterprise. Plus he has notice how hot that Vulcan science officer is. Surely he would be discreet and not say anything to Carol.

I mean because Kirk is on the Enterprise so often, so evidently his duties as first officer on the Farragut must be very light.

Kirk, being who he is, has that ship so well-run and fine-tuned that they don't need him on board constantly.

I'm guessing that Star Fleet Command assigned another Captain to the USS Farragut and Lt. Kirk is being used where the Admirals most feel he is needed at the moment.

I think I'm a bit mixed up with the timeline dates though, are we before or after the original cloud creature incident at this point?

He's currently the XO of the Farragut. The show is set in 2260 (or will be once it returns )

Season 3 will at least in part take place in 2261. Signage behind the Edosian bartender in the sneak peek footage seems to indicate that the Centenary of the Federation is being celebrated.

In past seasons Kirk's visited the Enterprise during a joint mission with the Farragut. His first assignment to the Enterprise was to shadow Number One as part of his training as the Farragut's XO. Kirk was also messaged by La'an under the pretense of gathering information about his brother Sam.

We've also see two alternate Kirks. One from a timeline were Earth didn't join the Federation and one from a timeline where Pike remains Captain of the Enterprise and Kirk is the captain of the Farragut.

So. maybe more temp assignments and joint missions.

None of this of course will matter when KIrk dies and we find out the show is not really in the Prime timeline! It's actually set in the timeline were Worf gets a painting of the Battle of HarOs from Data at his birthday party.
