Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

The exact quote from the producer seems to be

Co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers said during the panel that Darby is playing “a character that will be familiar yet completely new to folks that know Star Trek.” He added “If you know Star Trek, you will have a lot of fun with him and we had more fun than I could possibly imagine with him.”

So that seems kinda vaguely worded. It seems like it could be a character that Star Trek fans never have seen, but 'related' or similar to a character they've seen or a known character with a portrayal that is unexpected?
Commodore Matt Decker. Familiar because he was in a fan favorite TOS episode, "yet completely new" because this will be our first time seeing him under "normal" circumstances, whereas in The Doomsday Machine we see him as a broken and irrational man.

Granted, William Windom was in his mid forties when the episode was filmed, though the character could believably be older, certainly the novels had him in his late fifties. Matt Decker would definitely have to have been older than Windom if you accept the belief that Will Decker was his son, as it would mean that as of The Doomsday Machine Matt Decker has a son who is either a Starfleet Captain or will be promoted within the next five years or so.

Admittedly this post started as a joke, my intent was to just post the first paragraph as a sarcastic drive-by, but then while writing it I really began thinking it over and it seems plausible now.

Not familiar with the actor or his acting style, but I’d love for them to finally pick up again on the Sybok storyline they teased in season one. If he’s a comedic actor that could actually fit pretty well with the “laughing Vulcan” that we know Sybok to be later in life. If not that I wouldn’t mind bringing him on as Boyce to establish a foil for M’Benga.

That new preview clip is awesome and hitting all the right notes for me. Can’t wait to see how they conclude that storyline.

Maybe have him be Lt Kyle. Then bring back that other Kyle from season 1 and and establish that he is older Kyle's son or younger brother. They both love all things that are Transporters.

For flashbacks, certainly. But Garrovick died in 2257 so the current setting of SNW would be three years after the tragedy at Tycho IV.

That was the one he served on as an Ensign at Starfleet Academy circa 2250 and the Farragut was his first starship posting after graduating. His first deep space assignment.

You know this idea just came to me as to who Darby might be playing. Maybe not a character so much as providing the voice for a CGI Ensign Nano from the Pike comic book series Though he might not still be a Ensign of course. Lots of people not named Kim often get promoted.
