Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Yep. Just like with the exception of the Augment Klingons all "modern" Klingons (post-Kahless) have cranial ridges of one size and shape or another.

No, we don't.

*Feels sad, goes out like Hemmler*

I've also noticed that while my least favorite episode is coming up (All those who Wander), Hemmer really hasn't been in this series very much. Maybe his death was a given from the start, but I just disagreed with how they did it, considering Trek's idea of representation and all. I wonder if I will have a better liking for it when I get to it, knowing what is to come. Still, I do wish Hemmer was in this season more.
This bring up a question I'm curious about -

As a viewer, do you think the 10-episode season works or do wish it was the old 20-something episode? Or something like 13-15?

I don't think the whole "big lizard with human proportions that is cruel and evil because reptiles are all cruel and evil" concept is really that amazing. Don't get me wrong, I think the TOS Gorn are better than the average Trek alien of the week, but I do still think that they feed into the really overdone trope of reptiles being evil. It's like the Xindi - the reptilian and insectoids are depicted as the bad ones while their mammalian counterparts are depicted as the good ones. For a franchise that talks big about progressive themes, the message of "those who are more similar to us are good, those who are more different are bad" is pretty off-putting.

Granted I'm not a fan of the Alien style Gorn in SNW either - they're basically the one thing I dislike about the show so far. I'd like to see some non-evil, non-creepy reptilians.

Reactions: Sci
Gorn have been villains since TOS. SNW is a prequel so the Gorn will naturally be villains. Why complain about the reptilian race being a villain when continuity and cultural wise, they're villains?

The actual messaging is "Gorn could be cool villains, let's use them!"

Rigellians, too, I think.

One of them, anyway :p.

Yep.

The Gorn have Borg potential - as a story element, that could be both a good and bad thing.

I mean, when the Borg showed up in Picard season 3 my reaction was like Kirk's in that Simpsons episode: "Again with the Borg?"

But the Borg gave TNG the thing that Trek's not allowed to have: an adversary without the possibility of rapprochement.

Wish they would us the Tholians, to me a criminally underused "Villain"

Klingons, done in the right way, would be good, in the Comics, Pike has a particular Klingon that seems to be his "Nemesis" that he goes against often. Maybe next season do something like that, maybe not a klingon, but for maybe 3 of the 8 episodes, a "over arching" villain that maybe is pulling strings, maybe do like Enterprise did, and show some Romulan machinations but don't have them interact with the crew. Maybe if there's a season 7, have it lead up to Balance of Terror.

I watched All Those Who Wander last night, and I think I was hard on that episode originally. It's still not my favorite episode of the season (So far, I think either Memento Mori or Children of the Comet are) but it's not my least favorite anymore. I still don't like how they turned the Gorn into the Xenomorphs from the Alien Franchise, but I actually got more of an emotional response to La'n's story leading her to take the formal leave of absence. With all the talk about Una's trial coming up, I wonder what will happen with La'an and if she does find that girl's family and maybe bring some closure to what she went through. From a creepy and character standpoint, ATWW was a lot better than I originally thought, which is one of the things I hoped to get from this rewatch, to reevaluate the season and see if any opinions changed.

From the S2 promos I think the kid will be related to Kirk. ;)

Yes.

We all look like one species.

IDK about that. Some folks with dwarfism look a bit different from the rest, particularly the larger specimens. My aunt is under 4'6" and her husband is 6'5", 220. If you put her next to a 7'+ person, I think the visual differences might compare to other closely related species/sub-species.

Internally/DNA is another matter. I think.

At one time, diffetent species of humans roamed the earth.

Those Northern Romulans..

Could be different "Tribes" or planets, may be different classes of Gorn, Solder, Leader, Brain Bugs etc. One in TOS/Enterprise may be a brain bug type, while those in SNW are more soldier, warrior types.
