In the premiere he is referred to as "the new engineer" and indeed in Disco's second season the Enterprise's chief engineer was someone named Louvier. Though not seen, the dialogue implies Louvier had been serving on the Enterprise for a while, at the very least, Louvier was said to be very familiar with Pike's distaste for the holographic communicators.

Yeah, and we only see him beam onboard at the end of episode 1, otherwise he's entirely absent, but certainly no-one has haze-fooled Hemmer into wearing a dress uniform...

But you're right, it does seem as though Hemmer is familiar to Pike and Spock already. Maybe he previously served on the Enterprise, but not as chief engineer?

I need to watch the scene again i think.

Watching again, there's absolutely nothing to say Pike is familiar with him in the scene as they don't interact and Spock describes him as 'our new Chief Engineer'.

It seems clear that Hemmer and Spock have taken a liking to each other, which is natural given both of their personality types, plus the fact they are both 'outsiders' within the crew... but nothing to say he's been there a while. My bad.

I did also get the impression from Ghosts of Illyria that Number One and Hemmer knew each other previously, from that "I can sense that expression" "I know you can" dialogue exchange.

@The Wormhole I suppose we don't know how much time is supposed to have taken place between episodes. Or maybe Una/Spock have served with Hemmer previously on other assignments?

Possibly both yes. In fact, in my head canon, I'm now crafting a scene set shortly after the Q&A Short Trek where Una, Spock and Hemmer have to get out of a sticky situation by singing Gilbert and Sullivan because reasons. During a joint mission between the Enterprise and some other ship.

I actually really like the Klingon story in season one. For me the overly long trip to the Mirror Universe is where season one fell apart.

Two friends I have who were once active military said they loved the scene because hazing of this type often can/did occur in tight knit units when someone new (of low rank) transfers in; and it was the first time they saw this being reflected in Star Trek.

It can be a lot more brutal IRL, but yes, they’re definitely investing in those seemingly mundane “little moments” that make things more life-like and realistic. It could be argued that they’re finally exploring the human condition in a way akin to Roddenberry’s original vision.

I just retconned my head canon for Commander Thelin, he is Hemmer now.

I could have sworn I heard Uhura use the word 'Uzaveh'' when she was speaking Andorian to Hemmer. Would be an interesting touch, if true...

I wonder if next we'll hear about Hemmer's shelthreth.
