Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I think if I had one criticism of the show so far is how it insists on digging so deep into the lore and intertwining it all. So far, it's a real classic example of small universe syndrome.

For me, ideally, I would've preferred to feature the entire crew that we saw in The Cage and gradually, as we near the Kirk era, more familiar faces like Uhura and Nurse Chapel start appearing on the Enterprise. Nevertheless, we don't truly know much about these TOS characters origins anyway, so, it's really not a HUGE deal for me and by no means a dealbreaker.

I just would've preferred that the series stray away from TOS characters by not featuring them so soon.

But that's the thing: we don't really know if TOS characters were on the ship prior to Kirk assuming command, save for Spock. For me, I like that there is a mix of people we saw in TOS, those from "The Cage" and those we haven't met before. The familiarity of TOS characters make learning about the others easier, as opposed to a whole new crew and trying to tell all of their stories over the course of a season (because, for some reason, some fans need to know every single piece of a character's backstory).

Absolutely right. I asked someone today about how much do we really know about Uhura in the 50+ years she's been around? We know her as a familiar face, but, we know nothing about when she was stationed aboard Enterprise, the vastness of her skillset, etc. We take characters like her for granted because they've been around since the beginning, but, when you get right down to it, we don't know much about her.

And like you said in the other post: we're finding out more about these characters in 30-second promos than we have the Discovery crew.

To me, that's the secret to successfully building a character's story: start your series out as things are already going on. Get to the adventure or main plot as soon as you can. As your series progresses, your characters will build themselves based on exposition or action. And heaven forbid, let your audience imagine something for a change, let them fill in some blanks on their own.

There is nothing slower than introducing each character and telling their whole life story, then going onto the next one, before things even begin.

I wonder if this is going to be the cast we can count on for the entire run of the show, or if certain characters have pre-planned story arcs. They said that while the adventures of the week would be episodic, the character arcs would still run over multiple episodes. Will we see characters like La'an, M'Benga and Chapel, or even Uhura move on at some point? Back in the Berma-Trek days, I would have assumed that all the characters were in for the long run. But now?

Chapel is dating Roger Korby by 2261 and becomes very heavily involved with him bordering on marriage, so she'll either have to be in regular contact with him by then on the timeline or be off the ship.

Look for when Pike's hair reproduces itself, and turns out to have been a tribble.

(It coincided with Betazed's tradition to wear enormous wigs with large holes in the center for tiny caged animals.)

With just 10 episodes a season, they don't/won't have time for long drawn out intros. I actually LOVE the fact that we have a series delving back into characters we've gotten to know and like (or love) for the past 56 years. YMMV of course, but honestly; as a Trek fan - THIS is the type of thing I hoped for in 1987 when they were talking 'revival' - to continue with the characters I knew and enjoyed.

I'm still hoping that we get a Dr. Philip Boyce appearance, if not in the series premiere handing off his Sickbay to Dr. M'Benga then as a cameo later in Season 1. Preferably played by Jeffrey Combs.

Although as you already know, everyone in this show is played by Jeffrey Combs. Except Jeffrey Combs, who is portrayed by Vaughn Armstrong in an obvious ratings stunt.

And Brian Brophy finally returns . . . as Federation Ambassador-at-Large Commodore Robert April.

This really feels like a TOS reboot and series we were meant to get.. I mean if Jeff Hunter stayed on Pike would've been the Captain throughout the series and Kirk would've been not even a thought in Gene Roddenberry's mind. Unless he pulled a Decker and made Kirk just a movie character.

I hate to say this but what if Boyce died in between the DIS Season 2 finale and the SNW pilot and that's the reason why Pike is seen off looking all shaggy looking like we see in the trailer?

Also next to the Obi-Wan Kenobi show, this is number two on my most anticipated show to watch.
