Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

"Only three people in the past hundred years have had the privilege to sit in the Captain's chair of a ship named Enterprise. You and I are two of them, Chris."

Pike was April's XO according to Pike's Bio in Discovery.

Now that was just a computer graphic that appeared for a few seconds, so I don't expect them to beholden too it. But still.

Pike "Well there was that time you lost the ship to an Orion trader during a drunken poker game. What was that guy's name? He was technically captain for...."
April "I hate you."

Spock: "Did I walk in at an awkward time?"
Pike: "Does Number One like singing in the turbolift?"
Spock: "I was told not to divulge that particular..."
Pike: "SPOCK."

And maybe let us know what the hell a Fleet Captain does!!!!!

In the book "The Captain's Oath", Pike believed the title Fleet captain to be a bureaucratic position as it meant being the chief of staff to a Starbase commander. A Fleet captain's duties included the deployment and operations of all starships underneath the starbase's authority and being able to lead the occasional diplomatic or scientific mission if the need arose.

So it's basically a desk job.

I wouldn't mind also seeing Commander Una Chin-Riley getting promoted and seeing her take command of her ship.

I do hope they think out of the box when casting and writing April or his wife Sarah (I think of them as a package deal like Sarek and Amanda)
I had Sarah as an Ethiopian Jew in a story I wrote and April as human from a colony world (Not every human needs to be from Earth)

Pike grew up on a different planet in the novels I recall.
It is amazing how little has been done in April. I think there are only a handful of novels that feature him in it and one fan movie.

I remember the tie-in comic for Into Darkness, they made April a rogue captain who turned over command of the Enterprise (a previous one before the one we see in the '09 film) to alexander marcus and faked his own death and basically was arming a variant of the alien race that lived on the planet.

There's the part of me that would love them to do something different with Captain April, and there's the part of me that loves The Counter-Clock Incident, for all its nonsensical silliness, with all of his heart and soul and wants them to be faithful to that. I guess I should be happy that a part of me will get what it wants.

I grew up with Diane Carey's April. British pacifist who had to turn command over to George Kirk when space battles broke out because he couldn't bring himself to order weapons fired. Wore a knitted sweater over his gold uniform shirt.

What should a foldable cot look like?

It's nice that they're using orange material of several shades for bedding and covers. Same as TOS.

Really starting to look forward to this.

Been a long while since I've watched some random Trek. Given SNW is meant to be more episodic I thought I'd sample several Berman-era episodes. Watched VOY's Hope and Fear, TNG's First Contact & The Defector & DS9's Duet. I hadn't realized how much I missed just putting an episode of Trek on and enjoying a story with a well-defined beginning, middle and end.
