Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Kirk said the first time he was ever on the Enterprise was when he took command.

So all they have to do is have him never board the Enterprise, that's easy enough if he has his own ship.

It's the only way they can make this work, because we know Kirk and Pike don't meet until Kirk takes over command of the Enterprise

Pike's promotion to fleet captain and Kirk taking command don't have to take place at the same time.

In this shot, he doesn't appear to be wearing the Enterprise badge. It's possible they put him in the chair with the Enterprise badge just for the publicity photo

The franchise can't seem to decide which way to go with TOS era badges, keep changing their minds between all Delta and separate ship badges.

The Making of Star Trek said his first command before the Enterprise was a 'Destroyer'.
The new treks have been known for pulling from obscure sources before.

I guarantee they read the original writers guide early on in the development process.

Maybe I'm misremembering

You are.

Agree completely..... already annoyed that they've dumped Boyce, ignored Jose Tyler, and metamorphed Yeoman Colt..... Uhura, Chapel, M'Benga, Spock, now Kirk? Sulu amd Scotty easily could have been there too, if they keep going in this direction....
Discovery Season 2, and SNW take place several years after The Cage, so it makes sense that they would have been crew changes in that time.
I kind of assumed that he did, and that the other ship is where he requested Mitchell as part of his first command.

Yeah I doubt Kirk would get the Enterprise as his first command, he probably had something before it.

Then again, it wasn't the flagship yet during TOS, it was just one of many exploration vessels.

Though on the other hand, Discovery treated it like a prestigious posting.

Some folks' head canon has the E as his first command. We actually have no idea if it was or not,
Pretty much every book I know that deals with Kirk before the Enterprise has had him with at least one command before he takes over the Enterprise. So the idea has been out there for quite, and isn't any kind of retcon or anything like that.

I'm not that bothered by Kirk showing up, I had been expecting to see him at some point pretty much since the show was first announced. I am surprised they're already bringing him in in Season 2 though, I expected them to wait until the last season.
I watched The Vampire Diaries for a while when was on, and Paul Wesley is not someone that would have come to mind for me when you said we were getting a new actor as Kirk. I would have at least expected them to go with someone younger, since Wesley is pretty much the same age Shatner was when he did TOS.
Wesley's age, the fact he appears to be in a time travel story, and the different looking bridge kinda makes me wonder if he's actually TOS era Kirk and not the one from Pike and Co. time.

The uniforms used in Pike's one appearance on TOS did not have the flared trousers. That's detail added to the redesigned uniforms for the regular series.

Point taken. I still think the SNW trou look too skinny in relation to the boots. But I agree, this is far more fidelity to the original TOS aesthetic than I thought we’d see (and that many people argued we’d ever see again).

We actually know very little, and a huge amount of what we take as fact is the decades of conjecture we fans have created to try and piece together back story fragments of the characters and even the conjecture of things like The Chronology.

What we do know.

Kirk meet Pike when Pike was Promoted to Fleet Captain. We know nothing about the position or job duties of this title. As in the same statement Kirk references Pike as Fleet Captain and Captain, and this is before he discovers Pike was injured.

We know Kirk took over command from Pike. We don't know if this is when they meet, it might be connected but there isn't anything in dialogue stating that.

We don't know if Pike still has the rank of Fleet Captain or if it was s temporary rank, or if for whatever reason he was demoted. We don't know if he was still serving as a Captain on the Enterprise after this promotion. We know nothing about it.

We know Kirk's Dad lived long enough to see Jim proudly become Captain of the Enterprise. Doesn't say anything about it being his first command. There is no dialogue on the show or films stating the Enterprise is Kirk's first command, or if he ever served on her before becoming Captain.

We use 5 year mission to set a time frame, but that is also conjecture, because there is no dialogue stating that when Kirk took command of the Enterprise it was a start of a five year mission. So even the time frame created by Mike is just conjecture and educated guessing to get a frame work. We do know that Spock served with Pike for 11 years, 4 months and 5 days. But nothing states it was only on the Enterprise or if there were any breaks in the time of service.

Later in his career, Kirk would command the Enterprise more than once while holding the rank of Admiral. "Fleet Captain" is not a rank with any meaning other than an historical one - as chief of staff to a flag officer in the Royal Navy at one point - and may mean anything in Starfleet.

Trek has always played fast and loose with naval rank and procedures, eventually settling on "It's not really a military organization" as a fig leaf to excuse themselves.

Also, Kirk requested Mitchell for his first command. Doesn't mean he got him.

I thought it was in The Menagerie

Maybe I'm misremembering
All the character of Kirk ever said about Pike in The Menagerie:
http://www.chakoteya.net/StarTrek/16.htm
MENDEZ: You ever met Chris Pike?

KIRK: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain.

MENDEZ: About your age. Big, handsome man, vital, active.

KIRK: I took over the Enterprise from him. Spock served with him for several years.

Some fans have figured that meant they met once, on the day that Kirk took command of the Enterprise from Pike; but you could also interpret it as separate occasions.

IE - Kirk met Pike when Pike was first promoted to Fleet Captain, and sometime later Kirk took over Command of the Enterprise when Pike relinquished it.

It's very possible Pike could have been promoted to Fleet Captain, but still remained in command of the Enterprise for years after that.

Boyce was real old. He retired or kicked the bucket.
“Kicked the bucket?”

Gimme a break!

Or whatever happens with him will be declared top secret, to never be mentioned again under penalty of treason, like the MU and the Disco :D

So there is a video on Tiktok from a scene being filmed, that is quite spoilery:

So Kirk putting the moves on La'an Noonien-Singh, I wonder if he knows her full name?
Great, so this is going to be the *real* reason why Khan hates Kirk now right? :(
Also, Lucas Till from the MacGyver reboot and X-Men would be far more age appropriate for Kirk, and looks enough like him, and he's already connected to CBS. Although maybe he's sworn off CBS now due to his well publicized awful experience with MacGyver.
