Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Paul Wesley will be playing Kirk.

Fucking awesome. :techman::beer::biggrin::luvlove:

That's not how Hollywood works.

Sigh. I know.

But just imagine it... SNW is a fantastic series "on the level" with more traditional episodic Trek and it's ran for several years. It's the final episode, Pike's been promoted and he's welcoming on a new commander for a new 5-year mission. We're on the bridge, the bottom of the turbolift doors are seen behind Pike we see/hear it opens and two black-panted legs step out.

Pike stands up and turns, the camera follows but pans over so we still just see some of the figure, but not his face. "Captain Kirk, welcome aboard.."

Camera cuts to behind the figure we just see this silhouette and profile from the illumination of t he viewscreen. You can't make out any real details but the CGI work done makes it look like Kirk from a classic episode. "... She's a good ship, sure to bring you plenty of adventure and excitement. A wagon train to the stars."

Kirk opens his mouth, we hear him take in a breath and do that Shatner-y little jiggle/shuffle he sometimes does when talking....

Cut to black.

But, nah. Paul Wesley in S2.

That's just as bad.

This does not inspire.

I don't think this is supposed to inspire us old guard. We've already bought the trinkets.

Fucking awesome.

Yes. No. Maybe? I guess it'll all come down to how it plays out for me. Though I'm not really excited about it. It was something we all knew was coming at some point.

The thing that excited me the most was the photos with the character wearing a different badge.

By the way, that may not be the Enterprise. They've changed the colors of some of the set trim for that scene - the pure red of the railing details is a soft brown, and the wooden arms of the command chair look to be black.

So maybe the lighting is odd, but that isn't reflected in the color of his uniform. Or, maybe they've revised the set away from the TOS colors for the second year.

Or...

I guess there's a small possibility that Kirk is in command, temporarily or otherwise, of another similar Starfleet vessel.

Which would give them a "canon" free pass, wouldn't it? Kirk could meet everyone on the Enterprise except Pike. :guffaw:

No one should hold it against the actor. The part was written and someone was going to play it.

Don't hold it against him, it just kinda feels like some ji d of stunt casting. (Even though I didn't know who he was until today but, apparently, he's notable.))

Now.......how to reconcile him never meeting Chris Pike, AND it appears he's already a captain.......
Mendez: You ever met Chris Pike?
Kirk: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain.

I suppose they could pull a Star Wars Clone Wars and have Pike and Kirk always just missing each other the way Anakin and Grievous did...

I was saying this elsewhere; It would have to be while Pike is away on a mission of sorts, and Kirk only deals with Spock or Number One.

I don't like this idea. It could work, but to me it feels too obvious. The appeal of SNW is seeing Pike's crew. I already didn't like them bringing on Uhura; this feels too close to a re-tread of TOS.

Agree completely..... already annoyed that they've dumped Boyce, ignored Jose Tyler, and metamorphed Yeoman Colt..... Uhura, Chapel, M'Benga, Spock, now Kirk? Sulu amd Scotty easily could have been there too, if they keep going in this direction....

I just went back and watched that scene........I guess there's a little wiggle room.....I also went to Memory Alpha and I guess although it's never been mentioned, Kirk COULD have had another command BEFORE the Enterprise....

I kind of assumed that he did, and that the other ship is where he requested Mitchell as part of his first command.

I really hope they shy away from the Kirk cliches and pop culture version of him, and remember he was a serious officer and a stack of books with legs.

I can't wait for the remake of "Space Seed" where Kirk gets to tell Khan he boned his great-great-great granddaughter.
KIRK: Name, Khan, as we know him today. (Spock changes the picture) Name, Khan Noonien Singh. Hey, I dated a woman named Noonien Singh. You remember her, Spock?
(Spock rolls his eyes and sighs)
SPOCK: If I may continue. From 1992 through 1996, absolute ruler of more than a quarter of your world. From Asia through the Middle East.

Yeah I doubt Kirk would get the Enterprise as his first command, he probably had something before it.

Then again, it wasn't the flagship yet during TOS, it was just one of many exploration vessels.

Though on the other hand, Discovery treated it like a prestigious posting.

Some folks' head canon has the E as his first command. We actually have no idea if it was or not,

I’m not nuts about the insignia detail but can live with that. The shoulder pads should go, the black undershirts need taller collars, and the rank braids need moved up the sleeves and should all be gold. Then I’d be content.

In an ideal world, the trousers should have flared bottoms, but I guess that’s too much to ask. Right now, the effect is a little too early 21st-century skinny jeans.

The uniforms used in Pike's one appearance on TOS did not have the flared trousers. That's detail added to the redesigned uniforms for the regular series.

The SNW uniforms are great, really. They're the closest to the TOS we'll ever see in a full series, much better than the Kelvin versions (although the tunics used in Beyond were pretty decent.
