Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Kurtzman Trek readouts mostly suck. Too blue, too busy and too much chaos. They don't have to directly mimic TOS but more color and less clutter would be a big improvement.

Continues was amazing, but I'm sure only fans can really enjoy it
Continues: putting the "fanatic" back in to Star Trek fan film. Only enjoyable by real fans. Your mileage may vary. Look both ways before crossing the stress. Past performance is not indicative of future results.

Say what? The 1701 was lauched circa 2240 - the Discovery in 2258. <--- That's a near 20 year difference here.
No. 2245 for the Enterprise. 2256 for the Discovery. That's an 11-year difference.

Enough time for there to be some differences, but not enough time so that it's "Oh my God! That's so totally different!!!"

DSC is overkill personified when it comes to different just to be different and market merchandise.

different to be different. Change just to change. It’s (IMO) the biggest flaw in the Kurtzman era. But one I can (mostly) overlook even if I bitch about it from time to time.

It's a weird dichotomy. So much of DSC doesn't look like it fits into that era but it went through the trouble of making hand props and even certain starship devices as similar as possible to TOS. The hand phaser(basically the hand laser from "The Cage" mixed with a TOS hand phaser), the communicators which are even bigger and bulkier than their TOS counterparts, the tricorders, the desktop viewers with slots for duotronic datatapes or datawafers and the food synthesizer slots in Starfleet mess halls.

I'm not quite sure what I was thinking when I used to be an old-schooler. Maybe it was because in the early-2000s, they hadn't made a prequel I liked yet.

If I like a show, then I don't care if it doesn't look like something that came out before I was born. If I don't like a show, then I'm not going to suddenly say, "Hey! But at least it still looks like something that didn't even come out in my lifetime! At least it followed canon!"

This goes right back to my earlier post...
"But that's different!"
"How is it different?"
"I like it!!!!"

I'm just honest about it.

The Kelvin Timeline films go absolutely bat guano insane with some of their changes but since it's an alternate timeline it all sorts of works, even the ridiculous stuff.

It’s kind of a “we’ll meet you half way because we hate TOS” sorta thing.
You've confused Alex Kurtzman with Rick Berman. But you don't have to take my word for it, here's what Ron Moore himself said in January 2000:

“The STAR TREK past—it’s challenging; it sounds like it’s fun on one level, and I thought that was an interesting way to go for a long time. But it has a lot of pitfalls to it. You have a very complex future mapped out. If you are going to go into STAR TREK’s past, say, pre-Kirk, you better have an iron-clad commitment to maintaining the continuity that’s been established, or I think you are just going to lose everybody. Because if you go back before Kirk, and you start screwing around, and you just don’t care what NEXT GEN or DS9 or VOYAGER established, or the movies, or even the original series, you just try to make it up as you go along, I think you just lost everyone. The whole franchise will just collapse, because it will have no validity whatsoever. If you are going to go there, you really better be prepared to truly put on the STAR TREK mantle and be the keeper of the flame. I think that is really hard for Rick and Brannon. It’s hard for them to do that, because they don’t like the original show. Let’s not mince words. They don’t like the original show. They have never liked the original show. They’ll bob and weave a bit here and there in public. But they don’t like it; they don’t want to have anything to do with it. If you are going to go before the original series and do something, you better have a change of attitude. You better have an epiphany about how much you love the original series. It’s all going to be about leading up to that.”

Strange New Worlds really is in an impossible situation. It's designed to appeal to people who will never fully approve of it because it will never be 100% exactly like TOS. Yeah, they're making this series because so many people liked Pike in DSC S2, but they're also making this series for people who don't like DSC and PIC, because they're trying to cover all the bases by trying to have something for everyone. They think this is another one of the sub-niches they have to fill. And that's where the problem comes in.

Elephant in the Room: That's why I think they're making a mistake by even having this series in the first place. A lot of people here think they want this show, but they really actually don't. It's never going to satisfy what they want, which is this impossible idea they have in their heads. They like the idea of SNW as a series, but they'll never fully like the reality of it being an actual series, when they're finally, really watching it.

So you'll see a lot of disappointment in the SNW Forum, after the first episode premieres, not because the series won't be any good, but because it's not going to completely match whatever it was they thought it was going to be. The series itself will probably be fine, despite whatever it is they'll say.

They don't "hate TOS."

They don't care.

They were hired by the owners to mine this IP, and they don't have particularly good taste.

No, they're just exploring this era in a way some fans don't like. I don't get the correlation between the showrunners wanting to use modern production values and an updated but still faithful to the original design Enterprise and them apparently 'hating TOS'.

I feel a similar way. SNW sounds good. It appeals to fans dissatisfied with Discovery and Picard due to not feeling right. But, SNW will do the same and will not produce the warm fuzzy feelings that is desired.

Oh, B&B treated TOS like the redheaded bastard stepchild in the basement that they didn't want to reference more than they had to. Kurtzman Trek might not be enamored of the original look of TOS but they haven't designed entire series around avoiding TOS unless they absolutely have to toss in a nod or guest star from the original. The Kurtzman Era surely isn't alone in thinking newer Trek is cooler.
