Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

It'd be nice for a series premiere to once again be a two-hour event.
We didn't get that for Picard because we already knew him, it was a 10 week show, and the premiere itself was enough of an event. Disco was the first new Trek in over a decade and had a lot to introduce us to.

As much as I'd like a 2 episode premiere, if we get that it will likely be spread over 2 weeks. I don't think it is needed though. We know most of the leads and we know the current state of the federation so we don't really need the time to set all of that up. There is no overarching theme either. I am thinking we will get a longer premier episode that is a touch over an hour which is about 20 or so minutes less than a traditional 2-parter.

It was that way in the 1990ies version of BH90210. ;)
I'll never forget back in 1993, right before my Freshman Year of High School was about to start and my uncle -- I shit you not -- wanted to show me 90210 to show me what high school was like. (In his defense, he's from Iran and didn't know what American school was like.)

The eyeroll emoticon doesn't even do what my reaction was justice.

If you didn't go to school in an affluent So Cal community where everyone had sports cars and started high school in their 20s then you must have gone to the Saved by the Bell school.

One of the things I see in terms of SNW's potential is a lot of room to fill gaps left by everything from TOS onward, rather constrained by the other series.

As for "episodic" vs. "serialized"...I'm left scratching my head.

My only thought is how they will play out the fact that Pike now knows his fate. That could seriously mess someone up. An easy solution could be some sort of memory wipe/amnesia, either voluntary or not.

Anson Mount seems to agree with Kurtzman's suggestion that SNW will be episodic, with arcs being more "emotional" rather than plot based with some two-parters. I think this makes sense, because at the end of the day, SNW, if truly constrained by TOS canon, really can't go out and do that much galaxy-shaking.

I hope we get smaller stakes stories instead of the galaxy in danger again.

There are people who learn they have a life threatening illness like cancer or ALS or whatever and still function with this knowledge.

Yep. And he'll carry on, life as usual.... at least until the day he plays his answering machine to hear "Fleet Captain Pike! How are ya, you ol' devil in the dark! Say, I got a favour to ask. I can't make that inspection gig on the cadet training ship today, so I was kinda hoping you could do me a solid and pop in quickly? It'll be really quick. Thanks a mil'! BEEP BEEP! hahahahaha!"

Captain Pike puts his space phone away. "So, today i become a Dalek"

I think this was one of the things I really enjoyed about Lower Decks. Just a starship crew having adventures.

One still doesn't know exactly how it is going to turn out. Pike has had his ticket punched and knows exactly when this is going to happen. I still think they are going to do something that gets him out of that fate. Mount is a popular actor (among fandom) that has really brought the character to life and I doubt they are going to let "The Cage" jeopardize something they could be making money off of for the next twenty years.

I find that very unlikely since this isn't an alternate timeline.

If SNW takes place right after Season 2 of Discovery than they have 8 years of in-universe time before his accident anyways.

He doesn't know exactly when it is going to happen, there was no time or date attached to that vision.

Also I think you meant 'The Menagerie' not 'The Cage'.

It's still extremely problematic that Pike knows about it at all. What he does know gives him enough info to try to prevent it. He was in a Fleet Captain's uniform and still in Starfleet. All Pike has to do is resign before getting promoted to try to avert the accident. Doesn't help that in the Cage he already had thoughts about ditching starfleet.
