It really wouldn't. There're tons of totally mundane reasons why he might not be cmo anymore and there would be no need whatsoever for it to be explained in the story unless they want to do so.

Boyce wouldn't even need to. It's almost a trope that the Star Trek series Doctor has to at least appear and speak one or two lines in each episode of their respective show but they wouldn't even need to do that. In episodes where Boyce isn't required to appear in any way, shape or form just reference Sickbay or that "Dr. Boyce" or "Phil" checked out a crew member for something.
I think a demotion would need an explanation.
I think kicking a black guy out of his position for a white guy is also racist. It won't be their intent, but that's what would happen once McCoy would show up to become CMO.
Just have Boyce replaced by Mark Piper before SNW goes off the air. The canon and continuity have been there since 1964 and 1965. Why ignore it?
I thought about that. Boyce is still CMO but M'Benga is who we focus on. I also feel like part of the reason they are going with M'Benga is they have something in mind for Spock character wise that involves needing a human doctor who is very familiar with Vulcan ways most other human doctors wouldn't be. Maybe Spock will be dealing with one of his pon farr's or something else.
I think M'Benga won't be kicked out. Just a better opportunity comes along. Like going and working on Vulcan. I could see them writing him as a kind of free spirit who doesn't care much about rank. He just wants to really explore space and meet new aliens and try new experiences.
I think it is completely unnecessary so of course it will be done.
What was M'Benga's cited qualification for tending to Spock in "A Private Little War"? Where he interned. A fitting detail for a young doctor cast with an actor in his late 20s.

To go from being CMO to just a doctor on the medical staff with someone else being the CMO? Pretty sure that's the text book definition of demotion.
That's true but let's not forget Riker got demoted and turned down commands just to stay on the Enterprise. If he ever left for some reason it doesn't mean your old job will be waiting for you. But a chance to be on the Enterprise might just be to good to give up. One thing I am sure is they won't make the character look liked he is demoted for bad job performance. Thus it's interesting to think of how it all plays out.
For all we know he chose to lay down his cmo duties to concentrate on research. Or he may not have even been part of the Enterprise's permanent staff during his TOS appearances. He might have been promoted to a position beyond staying on any one ship all the time and spent his time moving between them for some specialist or research purpose. Or he might literally have just been promoted off ships entirely but acceded to filling in for a few weeks on the Enterprise because they were having trouble filling the post.
The guy was there for at least a whole year, based on his appearances in A Private Little War and That Which Survives. That's a hell of a long time for a temporary assignment.

Factually incorrect. Riker was never demoted. He just never accepted the many official promotion offers he received while being Enterprise's SIC. His temporary field promotion to Captain during the Wolf 359 crisis was correctly reversed once Picard was returned to active status. It was a brevet grade assignment at best.
He was relieved of duty by Capt Jellico for publicly butting heads with him - an act that Jellico considered insubordination. But this was not a demotion either. Just gave Riker more time to play with his rusty trombone.
Maybe he was demoted as a result of his mysterious de-aging.
Better to have been promoted and lost than never having been promoted at all.

Pike's age was not ignored in the Kelvin universe.
It's not true that Pike "is about your age" as Mendez said to Kirk in "The Menagerie." Pike is at least fifteen years older than Kirk.
Actually that does make since. He was out being a Captain when Kirk was I guess maybe 15 years old. I think Kirk is suppose to be 30 in TOS and if The Cage happened 15 years earlier.
