Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

You've claimed to like Enterprise. So you know she didn't time travel first.

I’m talking about in relation to Spock.

Damn. I must've missed the episode where Spock mutined.

“The Menagerie, Part One”.

Oh please. You know in SNW they'll say the ran into the Klingons before. Don't try to say otherwise.

Like I said, in relation to Spock. If you’re going to hit the same notes over and over, you need to do a better job of covering it.

Yeah the Mirror Universe thing annoys me the most. Should have left that be for TOS.
I don’t mind Time Travel but it was rather stupid to have the Red Angel suit designed in their era. Would have made way more sense if it came from the future.
Eh, when there is time travel involved who is to say on the era.

In terms of high tech that should have come much later, that is and always will be the transporter, but it was an invention of necessity with TOS and so it remains. It absolutely should never have been introduced in ENT, or if so, only as bulk materials or something simple like that. By discovery there is intraship beaming, and .. blech. If they ever did a complete reboot on Star Trek I really wish they would completely redo the entire concept of the transporter. Keep it but modify.

But to add, if time travel is a thing in the TOS era, and it is. If transporting is a thing in the TOS era, and it is, and remaking time and space on a stellar scale like the Genesis torpedo, then the Red Angel suit doesn't seem as far fetched, though it is still far fetched. But I really hope that's the last of the super science gizmos for the TOS/TOS Movie era.

That wasn't Mutiny. That's stealing the Enterprise to go to a Forbidden Planet. He was charged with taking the Enterprise to Talos IV.

Spock disagrees...

SPOCK: Captain Pike, may I remain for a moment? (flash, the others leave) You know why I've come, Captain. It's only six days away at maximum warp and I have it well-planned. (flash, flash) I have never disobeyed your orders before, Captain, but this time I must. (flash, flash) I know. I know it is treachery and it's mutiny. but I must do this. (flash, flash) I have no choice. (flash, flash)

Sorry I can’t go more in depth. Currently on my iPad.

[Hearing room]

KIRK: This hearing is convened. Mister Spock, you're aware of your right to counsel of your choice?
SPOCK: Sir, I waive counsel. Further, I waive rights to this hearing and request immediate court-martial.
KIRK: Request denied.
SPOCK: May I inquire on what grounds, Captain?
KIRK: A mutiny requires a trial board of no less than three command officers. Since there are only two of that rank available
SPOCK: Sir, I must point out that there are three officers of command rank available. Yourself, Commodore Mendez, and Captain Christopher Pike.
KIRK: Denied. Captain Pike is a complete invalid.
SPOCK: I believe you'll find he's still on the active duty list.
MENDEZ: We didn't have the heart to retire him, Jim. He's got you. Whatever he's up to, he's planned it well.

Captain's log, stardate 3012.6. General Court-Martial convened. Mister Spock has again waived counsel and has entered a plea of guilty.

MENDEZ: Mister Spock, are you aware in pleading guilty that a further charge involving the death penalty must be held against you should this vessel enter the Talos star group?
SPOCK: I am.

.
.
.

Bleh. Okay, so "mutiny" was one of the charges. But the main one was going to Talos IV. But that's a deep cut. I wasn't even thinking about "The Menagerie" while watching "Battle at the Binary Stars". So what I say stands. You'd have to really be looking out for it and have an ax to grind to pick it up.

The charge of going to Talos IV is the one that really sticks with me. I can't be the only one like this.

You're forgetting that Burnham is bad. No matter what.

Oh, bullshit. Sometimes the way a character is done doesn’t work. I actually feel bad for Martin-Green with some of the material they’ve handed her.

And I’ll be just as critical of Pike if they simply do a Kirk checklist for the things he accomplishes.

It's a joke...ffs

And I would expect nothing less.

Let’s see, she encountered cloaking devices first, came up with the solution first, time travelled first, encountered the Mirror Universe first, made first officer first, mutinied first, turned down the Vulcan Science Academy first, fought the Klingons first...

It just seemed like they had checklist of Spock accomplishments that they needed to have Burnham do first. I guess to give her some kind of credibility.
Most of those aren't "Spock accomplishments". I mean fighting Klingons? Becoming a First officer?Encountering a cloaking device? Time travel  He didn't even come up with the formula that resulted in the accidental discovery of time travel. ( It was probably Burnhams's mom ;) ) Though he seemed to have forgotten it the next time they needed to time travel. Heck, Spock's never even been to the Mirror Universe. The Mirror Universe came to him.

Fair enough. Apologies.
No worries. You and I have been posting together long enough for me to know that while you might be extremely opinionated you also tend to be fair...most of the time.

If I may quote SFDebris for you, "I might be an asshole but I'm a fair asshole."

Time travel is one of those things that gets ignored about as much the Genesis device does. "Oh man! We figured out time travel." "Fascinating." "Yes, I agree. Let us never speak of it again."

By my count the Enterprise "discovered" four different ways to time travel. Though the last one kind of went boom. ;)

Why do you have to have an axe to grind to pick it up? Why can’t you just be a fan with a decent memory?
Honestly, I go back and forth on this one. On the one hand, yes, continuity matters and shows that miss it can irritate me. On the other hand, if I'm thinking about another show then maybe I'm not invested in the one I'm watching...

Problem with Trek in general is that it’s gotten so immensely big it’s logistically impossible to maintain internal continuity after 50 years of different ideas and visions. To expect otherwise is, quite frankly, unrealistic. I’ll give them points for trying ... in most cases, anyway, even if it does sometimes make things worse in the long run.

Perhaps but the mistakes they made in Discovery were glaringly obvious. Usually is just a minor story beat that doesn’t add up which you can overlook as a simple mistake.
