Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

And of course, add on some new, original characters.

Yes! More Rosa Salazar! Do it! Make it so! Thrusters on full!
They could just have her come back as a captain period. After all, the TOS movies had Captain Scott, Captain Spock and Captain Kirk all on the same ship.

In a show called Strange NEW Worlds, I'd rather like to see new things. And that includes new characters. I don't see why any Cage characters other than Pike, Spock, and Una are necessary. There's nothing wrong with bringing Boyce or Colt in, but they don't have to be leads. Have Boyce retire in the first episode and hand his duties over to a new doctor. Have Colt play as big a part as any of the DSC bridge crew. And then populate the rest of the main cast with all-new characters. And please, let's have some more aliens this time.

Gary Mitchell might be interesting especially without Kirk. It was said in WNMHGB that Spock and Mitchell served together for years. Maybe Mitchell was on the Enterprise before he joined Kirk on Kirk's first command. Other than Colt the rest of the background characters were forgettable.

It depends how they handle Kirk's line "we met when (Pike) was promoted to fleet captain". That would imply Kirk only shows up when Pike leaves, unless Pike gets a promotion in the middle of the show and still stays on the Enterprise.

I wouldn't mind seeing T'Pol or Phlox on the show as a guest appearance.

I'm not sure what Piper brings that Boyce doesn't and Boyce at least has the assumed history and friendship with Pike. Gary Mitchell might be fun in the final season or also in the final season you see more of the TOS actors filter in. You know I would love Dr M'Benga as the CMO but I don't how to explain him loosing the job to McCoy in the future. Maybe Carrol Marcus and also a young Captain Terrell. Not all these people because we do need some new people in the cast and maybe some show up in later seasons or in guest spots. I still live the idea of using Ensign Nano and Chief Moves-With-Burning-Grace. M'Ress as well or at least someone from her species. The Andorian Thelian if people want a Andorian regular which does sound cool.

This. I thought that DISCO was bad because it was constantly referencing Spock and Sarek and Amanda and using Archer, April and Pike for references of greatest captains. So, now here is the opportunity to explore an era that I want to see (Pike's tenure) and the cast is beholden to "The Cage?" O_o

I want a minimum of Kirk as well. One exception a stand alone mirror universe story ( think In a Mirror Darkly) where we see Kirk and Spock plot to assassinate Pike. Could be fun if done right.

Instead of looking at "The Cage", maybe you can look at "Where No Man Has Gone Before" to include some familiar ideas. Instead of Boyce, use Dr. Piper. You can include Sulu, but as an Ensign fresh out of the Academy and assigned to astrosciences.

Personally, I kind of hope for an All Of The Above approach: some characters from The Cage mixed with Where No Man Has Gone Before, sprinkled with some Short Trek characters and background characters from the Such Sweet Sorrow Disco season 2 two-part finale.

Heck, maybe even use some Kelvin timeline characters like Dr. Puri or Helmsmen McKenna (and many others). I know the IDW Kelvin timeline Ongoing and Boldly Go series was hit-and-miss, but I thought it was kind of cool how some of the background characters were built on and utilized in some of those stories. Since the Kelvin timeline voyages and the SNW voyages are roughly set around the same time, I think the two timelines would have more things in common than Spock and the name of the ship.

I made the point of Boyce or Piper. But depending on the number of years between the Cage and WNMHGB, there could have been another doctor or two in there.

Or to take a page from Discovery's book, the CMO just isn't as involved in the storylines the way McCoy, Crusher, Bashir or the EMH were.

I'm just not seeing what Piper brings to the table. It's not like he was interesting or anything and if you want a old white doctor I think Boyce makes more sense in that regard.

Piper was lost, trying to find his way back to the set of The Rifleman. ;)

Note to Kirk: Don't act surprised when you make a Marshal from a Western that takes place in 1880 your Chief Medical Officer and he says, "I think I remember what my Doctor did," and then he gives you a bottle of "the good stuff" so it won't hurt when he begins to operate.

The chances of an alien sharing a name with a human are small. Unless she was raised human like Worf.

Colt is a single syllable word. Any language, alien or not, that has those vowel and consonant sounds is more likely than not to have a word that sounds either the same or very similar.

There are plenty of languages on earth which completely independantly developed the same single syllable words (with different meanings, obviously).

Maybe Jerry O'Connell can show up as Kirk, George S. Kirk, Sr.
Before SNW ends, Jerry O'Connell helps Kirk and his crew slide into a parallel universe where everything looks like it did in TOS!

Sliding into TOS prevents the entire Multiverse from being destroyed. The exact reason to be figured out later on after the fact, and will be explained on Twitter instead of the actual show. ;)

If Strange New Worlds is after Discovery 2, as seems likely, it's five years after The Cage, so plenty of time for its characters to have moved on. Introducing Uhura, Scotty, Sulu and Piper in later seasons would make sense, but isn't canon essential, those who are there in Where No Man might be as new as Kirk then.

Why wouldn't Uhura and Sulu? If Sulu shows up though I hope they remember he wasn't a pilot at first and Uhura wore green.
