Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Honestly, I think we have a better chance of seeing that cadet from the Ask Not Short Trek in this show than we do anyone else from The Cage not already featured on Disco and the Short Treks.
Which is my preference. DISCO was already accused of going to the well of nostalgia and familiar characters too often. Also, Star Trek is horrible in the fact that careers don't progress in Star Trek. There is no need for Boyce or Colt or Tyler to still be onboard the Enterprise, depending on their careers. And Boyce is the first one I expect to see gone.

Colt could have undergone some sort of of species reassignment procedure. Some sort of genetic engineering. I'm kind of joking, but kind of not as I think species reassignment could be a thing in Star Trek. I think it would be kind of cool, to be honest.

Maybe they just share the last name like millions of other people...

The cast will probably have roughly the same level of diversity as DSC and PIC. 2019's Short Treks gave us a pretty good taste of what SNW might look like. It will suitably piss off all the people complaining about "SJWs!" like has happened with the last two series.

SNW? More like.... SJW!!!!!

Honestly, I've been waiting for a chance to make this pun since the name was announced, thanks for providing me with one!

Strange Justice Worlds? Sounds like an interesting show. I'd give it a try.
It's an anthology show about the justice systems of the Trek universe. First episode is Earth post-WWIII, then we get around to Klingons, Cardassians and Romulans, mirror universe Dominion and in the final episode we see Wesley being executed from stepping on a flower or whatever that was about.

I find the Edo justice system interesting: A random area is declared off limits, so the anarchists who really wanna defy the law can choose to jump into it. Everyone else stays away cause that's easy enough. Those who tickle the dragon and are caught are killed quickly and apparently without pain. I could imagine people jumping in and out when no one's watching - their version of bungee jumping XD

I don't think TAS counts as canon. Not sure if the new cartoons will either.

Jason
Agreed. Though there is that photoshopped image of Gene Roddenberry in a Cage/WNMHGB era uniform in the 'Star Trek Chronology of the Future' books, but that's probably not canon either.

Honestly I hope they don't bring back any of the other characters from the Cage. I mean yeah DSC did a good job of updating/salvaging Pike and Number One for a modern audience so I suppose it's possible to salvage the others, but I'd like a more diverse cast.

And yet that's where April comes from in the first place. Just like Vulcan's Forge and Shi'Kahr and Tiberius and Caitians and Amanda Grayson's last name and probably more stuff I'm forgetting.

The design of the Sahlet in Enterprise was inspired by its appearance in TAS. TOS Remastered used a TAS cargo ship design.

TAS was made canon by CBS in the early ‘00s.

And the creator of Lower Decks has said it’s canon, or at least it will respect it.

You can have a diverse cast. It depends on how big your cast will be. I was thinking they should go with 8 people and would love to have some reacurring and secondary characters as well kind of like Walter on Stargate. I think I also came up with a new idea as to how to use Boyce. It came from me from thinking of the show Zoey's Exraordinary Playlist. I think he should be someone who has to step down as doctor because he gets a disease and only has one year left to live. Someone else becomes the doctor.

He doesn't want to spend his final year on earth alone because he has no family so he stays aboard mostly because he just wants to die out in space exploring and near his friend in Captain Pike. He also knows about Pike's vision of the future. The idea is you can spend some time with these two friends who are kind of like family dealing with their mortality. They both know death and pain is coming and they find comfort in each other because of this shared fate. Boyce dies at the end of the season. You play it as sad or maybe even hopeful because what if his torpedo coffin is intercepted by the Talosians and he wakes up on Talo's and basically Vina tells him they have revived him and they somehow know the future and wanted to bring him their because they know Pike will someday come back and give him the option of staying. He does.

Instead of looking at "The Cage", maybe you can look at "Where No Man Has Gone Before" to include some familiar ideas. Instead of Boyce, use Dr. Piper. You can include Sulu, but as an Ensign fresh out of the Academy and assigned to astrosciences.

Personally, I kind of hope for an All Of The Above approach: some characters from The Cage mixed with Where No Man Has Gone Before, sprinkled with some Short Trek characters and background characters from the Such Sweet Sorrow Disco season 2 two-part finale.

Heck, maybe even use some Kelvin timeline characters like Dr. Puri or Helmsmen McKenna (and many others). I know the IDW Kelvin timeline Ongoing and Boldly Go series was hit-and-miss, but I thought it was kind of cool how some of the background characters were built on and utilized in some of those stories. Since the Kelvin timeline voyages and the SNW voyages are roughly set around the same time, I think the two timelines would have more things in common than Spock and the name of the ship.

And of course, add on some new, original characters.

If I were to use another established character it would be the captain from the Tribble Short Trek. Have her come back all disgraced from her previous command and has to work hard to earn a second chance.

Yes! More Rosa Salazar! Do it! Make it so! Thrusters on full!
