Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

One of the issues of trying to make her feel coded as a poor person but in a universe were poverty isn't even a thing anymore on Earth. While you can see what they are going for it doesn't really make sense logically in the Star Trek setting.
It's not poverty. It's not coded for poverty. It's her living out in the middle of nowhere because she's paranoid.

She's just a nonconformist. She's the Dr. Servin without the spirituality.

Assuming trailer=poverty is ridiculous.

And because she refuses to tackle her chemical dependency on snakeleaf, which keeps her depressed and feeling down on her luck in that glorified late 24th century trailer.

Well their is that also. But they did have that weird thing about Starfleet firing her because Picard retired. Which makes no sense. Even if your not happy, then why not just transfer her or something. Nobody gets fired in Starfleet. Sometimes you get court marshaled but usually only if your own of their evil Admirals.

"Martialed." Please.

She felt unsupported and was making unsubstantiated claims around a conspiracy. She was going to be discharged.

After dealing with conspiracies and the Dominion War a less than satisfactory discharge makes sense.

Kirk stole the Enterprise, got it destroyed and ended up getting command of the next Enterprise. Worf killed Duras. Starfleet tends to be more open about giving people second chances.

But a lot of Raffi's problems are self-imposed and she refused to get help for them. That's a crucial difference. Raffi didn't violate Starfleet rules and regulations. She allowed herself to become a shell of her old self, and went down the road of substance abuse.

Unless there's some draconian Big Brother law in the Federation requiring the depressed and mentally ill to seek help or face legal punishment then there's nothing that can be done for Raffi unless she herself does it.

I'm envisioning a scenario where Raffi is taken kicking and screaming to a Vulcan counselor who mind-melds her into sobriety (hey Picard established that Vulcans can mind-meld Jurati into becoming a murderer so I assume there has to be a way it can work in reverse)

Of course in the 24th century lots of those problems can be solved by their magical medical advances. One hypospray shot and your drug addiction is gone. Still need therapy but their is no stigma to that anymore in society.

I'm not a big fan of the obsessive overuse of the word "code" in recent years. In this context, it makes it sound like there was some subtle subtext the writers were going after as it applied to Raffi's devolution. There was nothing subtle about any of it. No "coding" whatsoever. It had about as much nuance as one's spine being ripped out via one's rectum.

Most "coding" is about as subtle as a brick.

Kirk was willing to accept punishment, as was Worf.

Raffi refused to work with Starfleet.

Kirk, in my opinion, should have been discharged, as should have Worf and Jadzia but that's not the story being told.

I recommend the Madred method where she's given a severe jolt to her nervous system whenever she tries to reach for drugs that are displayed in front of her
Skinner called and wants his box back.

It's trying to create a narrative were none exists. No coding but individuals seeing what they want, like a trailer being equivalent of being impoverished. Like, that ignores all the context presented in the show and it wasn't subtle. She was a conspiracy theorist who lost everything by her choices and suffered from drug addiction and refused help.

Short of forcing help what else should people do?
