Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Can they, though? In the past, Star Trek's output has been the most optimal when they were focusing on movies or television, with the time period where they focused on both, the 90s, viewed as a detriment to both mediums. Even in more recent times, higher ups in other franchises like the MCU have blamed their recent problems on dividing their attention between movies and television at the same time and in Marvel's case they are beginning to shift back towards focusing on movies exclusively.

One difference though is Trek I think will always be seen more of a tv franchise than a movie franchise. Most of Trek's best stuff has come from the tv shows.

Only Mission Impossible I think made the jump from tv franchise to movie franchise, and even that involved Tom Cruise basically taking a sledgehammer to the tv show and altering it beyond all recognition.

I don't understand why people get upset that Jim Phelps was turned evil. I would understand if it was Jim Phelps still being played by Peter Graves. With a new actor and a movie not connected to the tv show then it really doesn't hit the same.

I think Graves said "No."

They could have named Cruise's character "Jim Phelps".

I wonder why they didn't. Only thing I can think of is maybe Cruise didn't want to invite comparisons between his version of the character and Peter Graves version.

I mean, recasts don't change audiences' attachment to the characters. You need look no further than this very board to see people up in arms about how Kirk, Scotty, Spock, or Uhura are portrayed in SNW despite being played by different actors.

Granted in SNW those versions are suppose to become the same people we saw on TOS. Being part of the same shared continuity does bring on more expectations. On the other hand people loved Starbuck on Battlestar Galatica and I think it helped that the show was not really connected to the old show so it's not like she was someday going to turn into Dirk Benedict.

Because it wasn't what they expected.

See, well, every discussion around Star Trek to understand how unmet expectations and head canon impact perception.

For me I went into the movie having never seen the show so it didn't impact me like it has others. Now A few years ago I did watch the old show. I still feel basically the same. As for the show I thought it was good but started loose steam in the later seasons. They went from dealing with international crimes to American gangsters every week it seemed.

That's what happens when when your show starts in the height of the Cold War and has to pivot later on.

I watched the film, never saw the show. The film was stupid. I hate the whole set up of the story. Had nothing to do with the characters, who I'm ambivalent towards, but a story that just doesn't work for me.
