Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

The majority would disagree with you

Do they though? I've generally seen a fairly even split on thoughts about the episode.

Not sure how that makes me feel. I'm cool with them trying different things, but there is an inherent risk in that.

One thing that has consistently bugged about SNW is the consistent idea of "They're all young! They will grow in the characters we know!", as if this show takes place like, 10-15 years before TOS. We're like... 5 years away from TOS. Yeah sure, alot can happen in 5 years but some of the characters are pretty far off from where they "should" be.

People can change in 5 years.

They usually don't change that much. Their going to have to be a whole lot of head canon action I suspect in the end to make it make sense on a canon level. Modern Trek's desire to ignore canon while wanting to be part of canon always seems weird to me. I would still love a twist ending towards the end where we find out this was a different universe and it's one in which Pike never ends up in the chair. He was able to somehow change his fate and thus a new timeline broke off because of it. The series final should be about Kirk dying and Pike finding out his future has changed. He now has a future to look forward to. Not to mention a whole new timeline with possibilities that might be explored later in a movie or more tv shows.

Man, I know what you mean.

Unfortunately they'd reach Balance of Terror and everything would go wrong.

Is there really that much "change" to get from SNW to TOS? Most of the characters are pretty much there. And no, Chapel will not become the cardboard cutout from TOS who's poorly written and poorly acted. Improving a character is not a bad thing.

That's not how canon works. Just being made makes everything SNW has done part of the canon. No need for "head canon">

Canon is not being ignored (see above). Treks been modifying/ignoring/changing continuity since day two. It's not a "Modern Trek" thing,

I mean, there's no real conflict with TOS Chapel's personality, she's just not a main character anymore.

But we are talking about a 5 year gap. Lots of the characters personalities on SNW are somewhat different from TOS. Which doesn't take away from the quality of the show but just it's connection to the idea they will all turn into their TOS versions so soon. Plus you got a few characters meeting each earlier than they should also the tech is still to advanced looking.

Mostly though I just don't see the point of even forcing the connection. I loved the tv show "Bates Motel" and I really liked how Norman Bates in the show feels like a young Norman Bates yet at the same time you can see some changes and also I like how his fate is different in the show from how it is in the movies. I am fine with SNW spiritually feeling connected to TOS. I don't need it to literally be connected via canon for me to like the show.

In fact I even kind of enjoy the idea of the timeline continuing to change and evolve, yet still somehow some familiar patterns will still happen. LIke Captain Pike having a encounter with the Salt Vampire and also being caught in a transporter accident that creates a evil clone of himself etc. Yet also some TOS stuff also plays differently as well. Maybe instead of encountering Khan on the Botany Bay it is Cornell Green. Stuff like that is fun to think about when it comes to the idea of them creating a divergent timeline.

5 years of high stress living can and does change people. You go through as many life and death experiences as the crew of The Enterprise, you're going do end up a different person than when you first signed up.
Indeed. I'm not even close to the same person I was 5 years ago. I've spent it working on a house, managing stress, starting a business and so many other things.

I'm not facing life or death or war or stress at the level these characters are.
