Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I saw an archived post from usenet(?) of a guy complaining that DS9 was too PC.

DS9 was way more political in a way that I could see a lot of right wingers having issue with than TOS or TNG. I mean, in episodes like Past Tense, Paradise Lost, Bar Association, and Far Beyond the Stars the writers left absolutely no doubt what side of the political spectrum they came down on.

Sisko is one of the few characters in the franchise to actually acknowledge his cultural heritage/ancestry.

On the subject of credits and canon names, remember that Doctor Who actually listed "Doctor Who" as the character's name. Are we to assume that is their real name? Or let's use a different British time-travel series, Primeval, as an example. For a while, they credited Ben Miller's character as "Sir James Lester" and he was also referred to as such in the behind-the-scenes and promotional material, but never on screen. And then a later episode made it very clear that he didn't have a knighthood. So why is the name Colt carved in stone for this alien crewmember?

And besides, Discovery has Hugh Culber and Picard had Hugh Borg. Unrelated characters can have the same name. There's no reason to assume they're the same person and definitely no reason to assume it's out of a desire to cover up whiteness.

On Latin-American and Hispanic identity and representation, there actually was some pushback when it came to Lucille and Desi's depiction as a married couple on television. CBS and sponsor Phillip Morris didn't like the idea. And even Ricardo Montalban recounted the discrimination he faced in show biz, being marginalized as a "brown person" in his words (even though both of his parents immigrated to Mexico from Spain, so he wasn't of Mestizo Mexican origin).

Our society is obsessed with race.. I'm obsessed with good acting.
Well, ... That took much less time than even I thought.
(EDIT: I just got caught up on the "other" thread with his interactions, guess it was inevitable )

Profit has always been the actual obsession, the color of peoples skin just became another monetary factor when some folks in charge long ago, began to disregard their own humanity.
It was all down hill from there.

Okay: SNW question that sticks to the topic.

What do you guys want to see from Yeoman Colt? We know if she's included in the cast she'll get her character expanded beyond what we saw in "The Cage(TOS)" so what would we like to see the writers give her to do? She could easily become the next Bryce or Airiam and not get much character development or she could be the next Detmer if the writers want to make the Enterprise bridge crew even half as interesting as the ship's senior officers during TOS.

One of the reasons we lost the "Yeoman" title/job in Trek as time went on, was because they were essentially a glorified secretary for the Captain and that only carries a story just so far.
(beyond the "Damsel in Distress" scenario)

I guess the first question is, what do the Producers actually want to do with the character from the get go.
Until we learn what the character's actual role will be the best I can do is throw out a guess.

I think it would be interesting to see her as perhaps one of the first instances of a ship having a separate Counselor for the crew and have Pike being resistant but forced to take her on by Star Fleet Command.
I'd also like to see her young age factor in, as the crew and the Captain look upon her as not seasoned or up to the job even though she has all the necessary qualifications and has been a Dr. for a few years already.

She's pretty much a cypher. There's no "hook" for the character in the Cage which was true of Rand as well. With out knowing what the other characters bring to the table it's hard to figure out what Colt might be.
