Well, technically speaking in this era there are no holodecks, at least not like in TNG. The fact that the corridor there is asymetrical would, to me, suggest that we're looking port or starboard instead of aft or fore.

I think the Xyrillians from "Unexpected(ENT)" are the origin of Federation holodeck technology. That episode strongly hints that the Xyrillian ship encountered was the beginning of what became TNG-style holotechnology.

I wonder what the range of the Telepathic Communication between Spock & Hemmer extends to?

Can Spock & Hemmer use Telepathy to communicate when one is on the Bridge, and the other is in Engineering?

Even in a crisis where regular comms are down?

Or does Spock need line of sight with Hemmer for his Telepathy to work?

I think I understand it this way: Spock was "sending" TO Hemmer. IIRC, Vulcans are touch-telepaths (except the few times in TOS that he wasn't for sake of plot,) so Spock can't "receive" FROM Hemmer unless touching. Line of sight is irrelevant.

Tuning based on Pythagorean intervals sounds decidedly unpleasant to our current ears.

There are many tuning systems just in Western 12-note music. Middle Eastern music has more notes (sort of where the cracks are on the piano) than Western. And East Asian (and I think most Native American) is pentatonic, which sounds like the five black notes pn pianos. And I’ll bet diff cultures within those systems tune em differently.

Heck, just how we pitch things is higher in US symphonic music than 100 years ago. Modern orchestras or pianos would sound overall too sharp and maybe strident to their ears. Sorry to go on. It’s a show primarily for Westerners, eh? Maybe I’m wrong in that count, but, yeah this was an oversimplification for Trek tv. Eps w music usually have that. At least it wasn’t sing songy new agey like every plot-related music on TNG not named Gilbert A. Sullivan.

I still loved it a lot. A little serialization with ep of the week and things to think about. WAY less emo than a certain other nuTrek show, if a bit quippy/lite at times (e.g. mustache remark in midst of briefing room). NO big mystery box with universe-ending consequences that lasts a whole season!!

And things look like they’re from the right era! It’s a visual medium, these things matter.

It seems to me they could help themselves by having two or maybe three stories in a season. That way they could tighten up those lagging middles parts somewhat, plus increase the chance that one of them could be exceptional.

Well, that's what I had suggested in threads for the other series. Basically, do several 2-3 part stories per season. Character arcs can be a season long or longer, but plot arcs limited in length. Although, I'm totally fine with SNW's more episodic approach.

After the canon defying first episode with Spock and T'Pring almost hitting it off, a new doctor instead of dr Boyce just because and Chapel in the crew, I couldn't finish the second episode of this garbage. The Fakeprise with its bright, white corridors are annoying as it is and the miscast actress for Uhura aside, the Prime Directive was introduced in the first episode but now they was about to break it before they realized what the comet really was.

I do like Anson Mount as Pike and the new Spock is good, but I decided to put on some real Star Trek instead.

Loved this episode! And I really hope that Nichelle Nichols makes a cameo as Uhura’s grandmother. If I recall correctly, that was planned for one of the JJ films? Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

These days Nichols isn't going to be able to make a cameo, but I fully expect to see her in a family photo.

In eight or nine years or so, Spock will project his thoughts to a guard to escape a cell in TOS S1 "A Taste Of Armageddon"; and will try the same trick again in TOS S2 "By Any Other Name", and he'll use his telepathy yet again to get Cloud William's mate to open a communicator in TOS S2 "The Omega Glory".

So yeah, Spock's future telepathic ability is pretty well-documented.

OK, I stand corrected. But I did say primarily, not exclusively.

Uhura is perfect.
The Prime Directive is older than the first episode. Breaking it is what Trek captains call a typical Tuesday.
