hmmmmm....I dont know... but maybe this is because this is a clip but I am not too big of a fan of the acting here from Celia and Ethan. Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana played the roles of Spock and Uhura better. People seem to be praising SNW but I will wait for the hype to die down a bit before we can have a real critic of the series.

the acting for me seems not to be hitting the right notes, even Anson Mount that I liked in disco, I think Pike's Bruce Greenwood form the Kelvin films had a stronger and authoritative presence than Mount.

Also this writers may be getting things off the rail with some legacy characters. Chapel had a long love crush on Spock that was I will say sweet and innocent. Now in this new series of the same character by episode 2, she is flirting with him that had that Uhura thinks she is his girlfriend, it is too much of a drastic change and I fear it may make Chapel come off as too aggressive or dominating, which is just so not her character.

Spock sounds like a Vulcan to me.

Not sure what the acting issue is.

There really isn't one. They're great. And any complaints about Chapel being "aggressive" and "dominating" are just...well, what they sound like they are.

Possible sideburn issue with Spock in this one, though.

This is very much an Uhura episode, and it establishes her pretty strongly. The marvelous thing about the story, though, is that other characters are spotlighted as well, several through their interactions with Uhura. Spock's one good example. Hemmer has a great scene with her which introduces his character, part of which is online. Our New Leader - I'm sorry, Captain Pike - has a couple of nice scenes with Una. And yeah, Christine Chapel has a little bit to do.

Oh, but Ortegas has a great bit, early on. Her personality really shines in every scene she has, IMO.

In TOS.
yeah but this is TOS too. same characters just ten years younger.

Bracing myself for the singing bit.

As I've said before, I'm a huge fan of Henry Alonso Myers' work on The Magicians (which I consider one of the best written modern genre shows) so I'm really, really heading into this with strong expectations.

And the thing is some people can change very little in ten years, and some have wild swings so much that the behavior wouldn't be recognized as part of their behavior a decade later.

And we the exception of a pilot for Spock, we never hear about his past. Kirk e hear about a couple missions and his being a build bookworm at the academy, but all the rest? We know almost nothing, and I mean nothing about the bulk of the TOS cast.

That allows a massive amount of leeway in characteristics, if they wish to.

It's subjective really. They are doing different interpretations of established characters same as Quinto an Saldana did. I've personally never been a fan of Quinto's Spock and like Peck's take on the character a lot better going back to his appearances on Discovery. Saldana was great, but we've seen so little of Celia in the role so far I don't have a preference yet. Uhura wasn't developed on TOS or in the movies and I don't one interpretation is necessarily better than the other so it just comes down to what works for each person.

It's also a new show with characters first created 60 years ago. If Chapel isn't presented exactly as she was 60 years ago I'm 100 percent ok with that. I watch this show to be entertained not to compare character traits from 60 years ago.
I'm trying to think of what possible standard that we would have to compare Chapel to?

More bluntly, I don't think these characters are being treated as real people. They are avatars of personal entertainment, and usually treated like static fixtures, rather than possible people.

Spock's more interesting in SNW than he's been in decades because - guess why - No Kirk. They've always been a duo, since the beginning. Now, Spock's surrounded by new people to whom he relates in a variety of ways, and they're all more or less equally important in his story. Yes, he's known some of them longer than others. But he's very much more independent of any one or two relationships here.

.
In general you should like the performances better in the films, even if its the same actor. Major films do far more takes, and rehearsals than what even a premium tv show will be able to manage. Giving actors and directors more opportunity to fine tune a performance.

Nausicaans are already known...
How can a single ship "regroup"?
The singing was straight outta Disco :D
So was bringing water to a desert world ;)

I liked it.
Gave it a 9.

Very cerebral.
A lot of second guessing going on by everybody and nobody got it exactly right.

I wouldn't mind if They come up with a way for Pike to actually survive the accident in ten years time and come out more functional.

Your future is what you make of it.
