Or he can be honorable and save the lives of the Cadets and still avoid a bad end now that he has fore knowledge.
Given how the "Go-Go Gadget / Ironman" style of helmet nearly failed to deploy at a critical juncture in DISCO S2.E01 when he was on the EVA lander, I'm sure Captain Pike had "Choice Words" for the designers / engineers of the Helmet system and told them to redo the entire deployment system to be "MORE RELIABLE" and less fancy.
Sometimes reliability is more important than cool factor, ergo simple is better.
They did up the size of the USS Enterprise compared to TOS.
They REALLY upsized the Captain's Quarters that it's ridiculous.
It's nicer & larger than what JLP had.
Are we watching the same show? 2 episodes in and I care about every member of this cast far more then I care about anyone on Discovery. And I like Discovery.
It's really refreshing to finally actually like Star Trek again. Speaking as somebody who has not enjoyed the JJ Abrams and Kurtzman era at all until now.

- All of the crew dynamics are good
- Story is simple yet interesting and well done with just the right amount of mystery

Another very solid episode. I’m continuing to enjoy the series. The characters and actors are enjoyable, and the story was engaging. I’ll rewatch it I’m sure in the next couple days, so I’m not certain, but I don’t remember seeing M’Benga at all this episode (I watched it fairly late and tired, so I admittedly could’ve just missed him).
I got the feeling Pike wasn’t trying to avoid his fate at the end, but reaffirming his commitment to protect those future cadets. I can see the interpretation where he’s planning an attempt to circumvent his part in the accident, but after the message of the episode seeming to be that some things are fated, and will come to pass one way or another, I took it as Pike reminding himself why he chose to seal his fate in Through the Valley of Shadows.
I really liked Ortegas this episode, she really got a chance for her personality to shine through. Hemmer’s introduction was great, and I’m liking our young Uhura and Spock more with each appearance
Overall after the first two episodes I feel like we haven’t gotten to see as much of Una as I’d have expected. It’s not an issue, she was largely absent from the premiere, and she got a nice amount of screentime this episode, but because the majority of it was spent relating to Pike over his dilemma, and even more so because of how mysterious her character has been prior to this show, I’m just really looking forward to viewers getting to know her a little.

I like how Uhura's story seems to be drawing inspiration from Nichelle's uncertainty about remaining on the show past season 1.
I liked this one. It's well written, it's action-y where it matters, thoughtful where it matters and the resolution is a real head-scratcher.
I don't miss that.

I think the character development really worked. I'm a little miffed about Ortegas not having more than a handful of lines, but I'm hoping we see more of her.
Lower Decks did it as well, although on a shorter and more exaggerated scale.
When you need to add an extra four minutes to the episode run time so you squeeze in a conference scene...

It’s a different ship. A different race. They made a different choice. It might not appeal to you but they didn’t fail anything.
The same way it communicated with The Companion in TOS S2 - "Metamorphosis".
Starship Captains have only so much power. If they could fix almost anything some of them wouldn't be complete messes of human dysfunction in their private lives or lose so many members of their crews on missions.
Is the crew complement official? Or is it just from The Cage?

Agreed. Of all of the things to fault different eras of trek in comparison to others I think the production design and effects related to the ships shouldn't even register unless they did something so off the wall crazy that it completely takes you out of the moment.
I remember similar arguments being made during ST:Enterprise.
Not just "The Cage(TOS)" but the official specs of the Enterprise seen in DSC. 203 officers and crew.
Great episode. Riveting. Near the end I was like "oh my god, is Spock going to make it?" as if I haven't watched every single episode and movie set after this that he has been in.
This really feels like Star Trek again. It's nice to see other crew members solve problems without everyone depending on one person *cough* Burnham *cough*.
The only minor critic would be to tone down the Captain Pike humor. Anson Mount is fantastic. I just want him to take life and death situations a little more seriously.... But...now that I think about it. He knows he will still be alive in future so maybe that's why he took the near destruction of his ship so casually. Now I like this episode even more.

Well, that's ridiculous, then. It's way too large for that. Even at 288 meters 203 people was low.
Hell, Discovery's even longer than any conjectured size of the TOS Era Enterprise and she has barely 150.
Well that's because she needs a lot of space for that gigantic turbolift system...
Experimental ships will do that.
They're all fictional, anyways. They can have any crew complement that's written for them. Future tech. Future requirements.
