That to me was one of the nice things about the episode. The audience is left to wonder which choice the world actually made ( Unlike like Berman are a TNG which would probably have stated outright whether the planet joined the Federation or not.) The ending Montage of what the aliens did in the time after First Contact show many different groups doing many different things - but it doesn't show the ultimate fate of that planet.
They may have indeed joined the Federation, or not joined; and for all we know one or both sides could still be preparing for conflict. They just showed students being taught about it, biologists going over the observed differences between themselves and an alien visitor (Spock); engineer is attempting to reverse engineer the 1701 based on their observations and own scans; and lastly that a cargo cult type religion began after the Enterprise's visit.
In the end they leave it up to the viewer to project or speculate what they believe probably happened after the Enterprise left, and I thought that was a nice touch.
Welcome to a franchise where the weekly budget is the decider for most things. There's only so much "alienness" a character can express to another and convey a clear message that won't involve exotic non-humanoid communication and reactions.
Not every species can be 10-C, a Calamarain or a Melkotian.

Well yeah, and I'd much rather have people visibly acting than have Mick Fleetwood Frozen Fish alien of the week.
I'm just saying this is a trope and there's weirder looking actual humans than what sci-fi people somehow instantly recognize as alien.
We need to hire more actors like Carel Struycken. With or without makeup he's eerie.

As someone who's often been misjudged based on reasons I've never understood(physical appearance?) Arena's message always resonated with me, so to me it kind of seems like the message, post-SNW, could be interpreted as;
"See, our instincts were right, they are hostile savages!! Always go with your first impressions!"
But I see where you're coming from.
Never mind the fact that he was on a starship full of, from his perspectives, completely alien beings.
He was walking in a parking lot, and then suddenly woke up in a place he has never seen before. It looks strange to him, so he obviously thinks he was kidnapped. If you believe you are being held against your will, what's the first thing you try to do? You try to escape.
It's as simple as that.

I would say she's sour, pissed all the time, but that's simply the beginning of her arc. The dark makeup around her eyes enhances it (many women wear it like that these days, and I don't see how that can be seen as beauty). Pictures of the actor at the preview or in interviews show a much more friendly face, of course.
I think you might right and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. Just to be clear though, I'm sure IRL the actor is as nice as they come and certainly quite attractive.

I would think Pike of all people would tell Batel not to derail her Starfleet career when there is nothing that can be done to alter Pike's wheelchair life.
If Trek is any indication the passage of mere months can mean a completely different assignment, death or vanishing. Years just means an increased chance that she won't be a factor.

Finally got to sit down and see this. I loved it, it's as close to the series I imagined in my head as a follow-up the the 2009 movie as can be, with a modern U.S.S. Enterprise full of likeable characters adventuring through the galaxy. I hope the quality keeps up, although it'll be awhile until I get to see more episodes.
I mean, SNW's mission statement is to be an action/adventure story, so it's never exactly going to be the most highbrow examination of politics. But installing mediators would frankly make the story a pro-colonialist story -- it would frame the Federation as being both "wiser" than the Kileyans and as having a right to exercise power over them. Pike leaving is him respecting Kiley's right to decide its own fate.
I'm sorry, but if I'm assaulted, rendered unconscious, abducted, and wake up as an alien's prisoner, I'm going to freak out no matter how similar the aliens look to me or what color the medical bay is painted.
Judging by her Instagram account and by her appearance on Australia's Next Top Model in 2011 (11 years ago now!), actor Jess Bush's hair is really like that. Dying it bleach blonde appears to just be her signature style.
Not sure why the writers looked at Data to determine how Spock should act. But they did. They introduce spock as he uses the word "query." And Data on the bridge of the pilot of TNG using "inquiry" about the word "snoop." And then they have Spock giving a computer-like countdown of the years, days, hours, and minutes that Data did routinely to the annoyance of others.
In the pilot episode, some of the speech was fast, too. Perhaps trying to fit in everything in the script without making more cuts and edits. Such as when Spock was briefing the captain after he beamed to the ship.

Nope.
He acts like "Cage" Era Spock. That's what he acts like. DATA is the character that was designed to behave sort of like TOS Spock.
