I recently showed this episode to my sister who isn't the biggest Star Trek fan and when she saw the the Sam kirk introduction at the end, she said, "shouldn't it be George Kirk? Only James called him Sam." When I asked how she knew this rather obscure factoid she said she learned it from fan fictions. Apparently the character is popular there.

 

McCoy and Aurlan called him Sam, too. So not a hard and fast rule. Still, props to your sister.

 

I liked the first one, but I preferred the second one.

I love the subtle callbacks in the spacesuit design.

On second viewing I found a blooper. Pike was surprised that Una and La'an know each other but that fact was stated in the personnel file Pike read earlier.

 

Maybe he didn't finish reading it

 

Plenty of Starfleet Captains probably skim reports, put the PADD down on their desk and go: "Okay, done with that."

 

Kirk is the worst, he didn't know Spock's father was a famous ambassador.

 

Yeah, for real. If my closest workmate and best friend had a well-known Ambassador for a father and I didn't know that for years I'd be one lazy workmate and friend. Or give my friend a medal for being the best secret-keeper around.

 

Well, Spock always did have a habit of never telling anyone anything about his family, even to his closest friends, until some situation sneaked up and bit them all in the ass. Then Spock was like, "Oh, by the way..."

Friendship is a two-way street.

 

Kirk learned from Pike

 

"You have a half-brother?"

"Clearly."

"Touché."

 

I wonder if Pike knew about Sybok?

 

I hope not. I'm still trying to forget about him.
