The kettle would like a word with you.
So I've just said that there are more than one reasonable interpretation although there is a single literal one, and you think I'm not open to other options?

Or did you just answer that to be a contrarian?

I preferred the test where I was put in an awkward chair to do without a surface to see if I could figure out to the drag the table on the other side of the room over to me.
When my parents first saw that in MIB, my dad recognized parts of that, since he was in a similar situation in officer training in the Air Force. He said you'd be surprised how many were not able to assess everything first, then go for the solution (and yes, some of the pencils were neatly cut to snap when trying to do the test, etc.)

I don't think they're in a committed romantic relationship. They're clearly friends and they clearly care about each other, but she literally says that she hopes he's not on Earth the next time she is, and they make no plans to keep in touch while she's deployed. To me, they seem more like friends who occasionally have sex, not two people in a committed relationship.

You might be right. Their relationship will either have just fizzled out by then or she was on deep space assignment. Or my earlier fears are true and she's all "Ew, melty. Don't want that." But then again she just might not be able to get to the Starbase in time before Spock kidnaps Pike and reunites him with Vina. At that point Mendez tells her "Sorry. You missed your chance. An old crewmate took him to be with an old melty girlfriend in forbidden space."

COMPUTER: Unable to comply. What do you think this is? The USS Voyager?

PIKE: Una, Dos, Tres. Yup, you're all accounted for. Now, um, what happened to the rest of the Archer crew?

TOS literally had an episode with literal Nazis.
And for another example of Star Trek using historical/archieved real world footage - in TOS S3 "Let This Be Your Last Battlefield" when Lokai and Bele are running through the 1701 corridor to the Transporter room - the semi-faded footage of destroyed and burning buildings was WWII newsreel footage of various bombed buildings taken shortly after said bombings had occurred.

Or they are simply Spacedock buddies.

And if we're just limiting "woke political messaging" to even mentions of then-current or recent events TOS mentioned Hitler by name at least three times over three seasons. Trek has always had a political underbelly to comment on the modern world and whether it's as subtle as a sledgehammer or far more quiet it's always there.

As I said above, your in HIS class, you follow HIS instructions.
Of course. And I'll remind you that I actually agree with you that this was the correct, literal answer. I'm simply pointing out that language is rarely literal, and that I think a course on reading comprehension has to take that into account as well.

Heh ... there was no discussion allowed.

We walked in, he gave each of us the test, gave his instructions and said proceed.

He wasn't a bad Prof., you are a bad student.

Your in HIS class to learn.
Not be the Professor.

My wife has a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition, and has taught English at the university level for 27 years. I have yet to see a college level course specifically devoted to "English Comprehension." That is not to say that such a course has never been offered anywhere, just that I have never encountered one in 38 years as either a student or faculty spouse. What college or university offered the course and what was its course number - was it a 100-400 level course or a graduate level course - and how many credit hours did students receive for this course?

The exercise/test you described is virtually identical to one my ninth grade science teacher issued to us the first day of class back in 1980. The usual point behind the exercise is not to test English comprehension. It's to get one up and over on competitive overachieving students by leveraging their eagerness to perform and typical test taking behavior, behavior that usually works to their advantage, against them. It's also supposed to be a lesson in not leaping into action before having read and processed all the data.
