It was a pretty good start. Big fan of Mount and rest of the cast was good/has potential.
Didn't mind the opening sequence effects wise. Loved the musical theme and the sequence..
Didn't like the T'pring/Spock stuff. Cringe worthy IMO. But so was T'pol/Tucker gelling each other in ENT. This was not quite that bad. And not a supper biggie.
Not a super fan of how they are re-imagining Chapel. Wished they just created a new character instead.
Otherwise I liked what I saw. If the Orville is a modern version of TNG (without the overt comedy), then SNW feels like a modern version of TOS.
I wonder if it is just so hard to do a vulcan romance, watching the tpring/spock stuff made me realise just how much I appreciated the kelvin spock/uhura romance form star trek 2009 and Beyond, although that has more to do with the fact that the actors can really act. (Quinto and Saldana) and they talked more realistically. Unlike the query, response, query, response back and forth with spock/tpring. LOL.
Peck imo is very one note and he is capable of showing only one expression. Quinto and even Nimoy, knew how to switch faces and show different facial expression even in the vulcan manner, Peck may not even to do the ''spock smirk'' Nimoy was so good at doing and Quinto could do also when he confronted Jim for cheating on the kobi yashi maru test in star trek 2009.
Peck seems to have only one face and for his voice, people seem to be praising, it may be too deep. I cant see Peck saying worlds like ''Jim'' as Nimoy does and you can see more of spock's human side. Peck to me was miscast.
As for Chapel I think I know were this is heading to fans who are saying that she is too reimagined, I think she is that way for a reason, when she and spock date (which has been confirmed they will as teased already in the trailer) Spock will likely break her heart and that is the reason she turns into the mild Chapel, who will still see carrying the love touch for Spock.
that is the only way her story can go in this prequel and the fact that it is Kurtzman, it is easy to predict. The are setting Chapel up for some kind of big tragedy that will make her a shell of her former self as she was in TOS.
But I will wait for the feminist to scream that storyline is so sexist and anti feminist, forgetting that Chapel is only known most famously for having a huge crush on spock and all what SNW is doing is giving us the origin to that.
