I mean i enjoyed discovery season 4, but yea this looks like its going to be much better. My issue with discovery, despite enjoying it overall, is everyone talks about their feelings way too much.. i mean in s4 even the ship is talking about its feelings lol..Return to more of an old trek feel should be a nice change and this had that feel for me
Talking about feelings is perfectly fine... when you're not currently fighting for survival with a deadline of a few seconds and should be doing something urgently! :D

Though I like DSC Season 3 and especially Season 4.
Disco season 4 is the best season of modern-Trek as far as I'm concerned.
On the new Mirror Rating Scale, right? :shifty:

Spock has a hairy chest in Tos!! Come on!!
Perhaps T'Pring asks him to shave it :D

Dunno about you, but I'm praying for a big shiny spaceship to hover in the sky and tell us to shape up so we can join the stars.
It was a nice connection to him watching DTESS earlier - that probably gave him the idea.

Nurse Chapel has been busy
It would be so funny if that's the reason! Colt was the first experiment, and it was permanent. Now she's trying temporary changes... :D
And if it turns out it's simply too impractical, with eyes and ears reforming and things not lasting long enough, that's a good explanation why they don't do this anymore later.

Again, I want to mention comic books, which typically engage in these sorts of creeping, piece-meal retcons as they go along. It's not an issue.
No comic claims to be prime though ;)

Interesting to see Cardassia, Trill and Bajor on the star map, I wonder if we'll see first contact with any of them.
Could mean they knew about Bajor and Cardassia, but decided to let them figure out their conflict before making contact. When did the occupation begin again? They did have Cardassian drinks in Kelvin 2258 though.

Also, how did Nurse Chapel have the DNA of the alien race in order to disguise Pike, Spock, La'an? Any explanation to this that I missed?
I'd also like to get more info on that

Here's one - why are the landing party in uniform when they beam down but materialize in civilian clothes in an alley? A few tweaks to the transporter's transmutation circuits? ;)
It's a new old function the transporter never had before. But later, it would explain why Picard tells the computer on his way to the turbolift what kind of clothes they need. Perhaps the E computer can do that.

Everywhere I go today, most people are praising a new Star Trek episode.
I don't know anyone in real life I can talk to about it, no one has seen it :(

Never!

So much better :D

For what it's worth M'Benga appears to be usinng cosmetic appliances to change Spock's appearance in another episode this season, putting what looks like latex on his forehead.
So maybe it's like the ghostly holocomm approach in early Disco - they decide against it, realigning it with established continuity.

I was impressed that they went ahead and made a direct comparison to our current times with video footage and everything. Gutsy in a very positive way.
I wonder how those people who recognize themselves or their signs feel about this :D
You're in Trek canon now - as the bad guys! :D

It's difficult to explain, but the whole thing lacks a certain science fiction dryness.

This is emo-Trek. With sentimental music spread throughout.
I have no idea what any of that means.

It's like a stupid person's idea of what smart or logical dialogue should be.
Do you have a specific example? I noted that the writing isn't great, but I think you're exaggerating.

Uhura, as portrayed by Nichelle for example, feels like an adult. A professional during her job. In SNW Uhura acts like a 16 year old who's stoked to be on a Star Trek show.
If I may make a suggestion, enthousiasm is not immaturity. Maybe we've gotten too used to grouchy, cynical or broken characters.

I liked it. Gave it a rating of 8 before realizing the rating system is reversed here. So a 3.
it is? Damn! But why?!

Could mean they knew about Bajor and Cardassia, but decided to let them figure out their conflict before making contact. When did the occupation begin again? They did have Cardassian drinks in Kelvin 2258 though.
as per my topic months ago, cardassia should be quite democratic and quite thriving at this time, it would be great to get to know it and see the fall.

In 50 minutes I actually know most of the crew’s names, unlike Discovery
Same here.

Joyous hour
As someone who absolutely loathes Picard and Disco (Aside from a number of the Pike episodes) all I can say is I smiled for 60 minutes today
So you kept smiling for 8 minutes after you were done watching? ;)

The title was bland, it's reaching Berman Era "wallpaper music" levels.
Which one? DS9's theme was amazing, VOY's won an emmy and ENT's, like it or hate it, is not generic.

i think he’s referring to the berman era *background* music, which was usually generic and serviceable. A are these titles. Or pretty much all Kurtman Trek titles but Picard season 1 and Prodigy.

One of the things I noticed when watching Non Sequitar (VOY) today, Berman era accompanied just about ANY fight scene with these dark, eerie tones…. Such a weird choice.. when Harry and Tom fight a bit in the bar, the scene does not ask for any music, in fact: it would have worked 1000 times better without it. But there it is: almost horror-film music..! Say what you will about Kurtzman-era Trek, but the scoring has been fantastic: from DSC to SNW, from LDS to PRO..!

A lot of the characters act immature.

One of the continuous problems of Kurtzmen Trek has been how juvenile it is. Looks like that won't be changing.
You do know that Uhura is a cadet fresh out of the academy and this set 5 years before TOS right?

....touché.

That doesn't make any sense. ENT exists in this universe and it had human-rated transporters. Ergo transporters weren't new. Also there's nothing in TOS to indicate that they were.

Yes there were only three; Number One explains the circumstances of their imprisonment.

Why are you being so defensive? You don't think it's reasonable to assume that spoilers in this thread relate to this series? How was I to know?

Being defensive? You said something about me, to which I responded, just like before. Simple as that. I don't know what is reasonable to you, but I put a spoiler tag in so any reader would not (hopefully) be surprised or upset by what I hid under that spoiler tag. In a forum that allows for open discussion of spoilers for the thread's subject matter, then why would I put a spoiler tag over something that decorum allows us to openly discuss? Further, you chose to hit the spoiler tag.

Further, you chose to hit the spoiler tag.
Yes because I assumed it was a spoiler about the topic of the thread, which I've seen, not a different series which the readers here might or might not have seen. My suggestion is that "Spoiler: Picard" would've been a more respectful choice.

Agreed. I misremembered the quote. Yes, 2 billion is a huge number. My only point was that it isn't total nuclear war where no one at all would survive. The US and USSR each have the ability to destroy the world many times over. Clearly, in a total nuclear war, the human race would be extinct. WW3 in the Prime timeline wasn't a total nuclear war. Yeah, I'm sure it sucked bad . . . to put it mildly!
Understood, glad Trek revised the First Contact figure of 600 million, it sounds like a lot but its less than 10% of the population. It might take billions to die for humanity to try and get their shit together, cos we are that dense and ignorant

So, this less-advanced species on par with us detected some warp signatures "nearby" and just reverse-engineered the technology and weaponized it inside a year or so?
Never underestimate hate and the desire to kill the other side is a great motivator for inventions
Or you know, a male Alien. A bi-sexual Pike would‘ve been a bold move.
Or have three in a bed! ;)

some easter eggs as it wont surprise me since Alex Kurtzman is always trying hard to make star trek more like marvel and marvel are known for their easter egsg, but was that a Vokaya Necklace Tpring gives to Spock? the necklace kelvin Spock gave to Kelvin Uhura in Star Trek Beyond? I don't think it is a coincidence they look quite similar

But you can't retroactively change technology or the entire proportions of a ship, either. If the impossibility of a thing in real-life continuity is the problem, it should be a problem for other physical things as well. I guess we place more "value" in characters than props (even when talking about entirely secondary characters), but objectively there's no real difference.

I think it's easier to assume the tech changes can happen offscreen during a refit or the invention of a new piece of tech than it is to assume a person can change their race. I mean we have seen in real life how tech has changed in our lives. My tv today looks different than the one I had in 1995. But I have not seen yet one person who is black but use to be white. Or someone who is a Asian but used to be Latino and so forth.

Yes but that's not the kind of change we're talking about. For instance, if one wants to be a huge purist, the Enterprise Bridge in The Cage is essentially the same as in regular TOS, with minor alterations, while the one in DSC is completely different (and much larger) but is supposed to be in the middle of the two, and then changes quite a bit for SNW. The Enterprise also can't be the same ship because it's so proportionally different. We ignore these, not because they are particularily possible, but because we ascribe them to out-of-universe changes, while for some reason the ethnicity of an actor is very important.
