The politically correct term is "Cultural Appropriation." That is when an entity in the culture copies an element in the culture and propagates the meme but there is a contrary meme out there that declares natural cultural propagation of memes are bad when done by a member of a different subculture and a subculture that holds some cultural advantage over the subculture that originates that contrary meme. The authority on these matters is clearly the members of the subculture that "commit" this theft of memes but understand than it is a theft.... while also failing to understand how memes propagate.

agreed. nitpickers will disect it, open it up to see what it ate, try to stomp all the joy out if it, but that's fine. it was well done. this honestly was the star trek i have been hoping for.

I got that impression (that he did have feelings for her) watching him watch her on the bridge viewscreen in TOS. Nimoy as usual did a bang up job showing how complicated Spock's mind and heart were.

That's the 2nd time you've mentioned the USSR in the present tense.. I just want to make sure you know that hasn't been in a thing since like 1991.

In both of those situations, the name of the species wasn’t revealed to humans. We can debate the idea of whether humans should meet them at all, but there was no violation there.

Wow, now you're getting rude! Take a break man.

For the record, I said "limited" nuclear war--I never said "global". It wasn't an all out nuclear war. And, yes, what I said is quite logical. If it was total nuclear war, humans would be extinct. But it was limited, so only 30% died.

But I don't appreciate your insults, so I'm done with this inane conversation.

And ENT kind of urinated in the communal swimming pool in Season 4 anyways when Archer and others learned of a power called the Gorn Hegemony and tasted an alcoholic beverage from the species. Hearing about an alien race and then a small girl being held prisoner by that race many decades later with no firm determination on first contact status are completely separate from the events of "Arena(TOS)" so don't conflict with them.

    The Gorn debate is silly.

Obviously "ARENA" is the First Time a STAR FLEET SHIP/CREW from the TOS era actually encounters them.

La'an was a child who conveyed her horrible experience after having been captured from a colony and then released a few years later to be picked up by a non-Star Fleet group/ship.

I've reread the transcript. The ship didn't identify itself and just attacked the colony. Kirk simply states he is fighting a creature "the Metrons call a Gorn. " it implies his unfamiliarity, and Spock and McCoy comment about the possibility of the colony being in the wrong due to encroaching on Gorn space. All Spock states is the area is largely unknown.

It's funny that this episode actually showed us what might have happened after the events in
"A Piece of the Action" as the result of McCoy loosing his communicator on Sigma Iotia II.

Aaand - I watched it again and enjoyed it just as much! The nitpicking about Chapel's access to crew DNA doesn't seem like a thing: it's handled well. Spock showing up in less than a day from Vulcan is obviously a goof, but I didn't even notice it the first time around. There's a few lines that were very hard to understand and I had to turn on captions. I really liked Spock's scene with T'pring (though I wish they'd done a little of the Vulcan finger-touching thing to give it a little more of an alien touch). My good experience survived two viewings...

So, this less-advanced species on par with us detected some warp signatures "nearby" and just reverse-engineered the technology and weaponized it inside a year or so?

    That's a lot to swallow.

Still, really, a pretty solid episode. Will give it's full re-watch this weekend. (First viewing was kind if broken up with a day of work between the second act/"commercial" break and the rest of the show.)

Pike's wife? Girlfriend? Nightly Fling? Calls the communicator a "phone?"

I really like the "take me to your leader" moment, him revealing the ship, and the coming into the summit to set them straight. As I think about it more the episode really comes out as good and all of the goods outweigh the nitpicks and stylism/dislogue/behavior quibbles I have. Really, this is probably the best and most "Trek"-like I've seen since Enterprise was canceled.

Hopefully the road will level out as we move forward.
