I guess the poll is going in reverse. I graded this episode a 9, when I think in the context of the poll I should have graded it a 2.
I loved this episode, but I'm hesitant to give it the top grade because I want to see what else they have to offer. This episode felt like the Star Trek I love, where there is an abundance of hope and optimism and just fun. Loved how much levity there was, especially Chapel's personality (Which might be the highlight of the season for me), M'Banga, and Spock. I also loved La'ann's story and look forward to seeing more.
I think what I enjoyed the most was this was a continuation of sorts of Pike's story from when he saw his own fate. That was one of my favorite scenes in Discovery Season 2, and to have that serve as the backbone of this premiere was genius. The mission on the planet was great, very Star Trek, and I loved Pike's campaign speech. I wish there were politicians who were like Pike today, not dividing us but trying to bring us together and just listening to both sides. I would vote for Pike any day. Ironically, he represents the optimism we all need in our lives and Mount did a great job bringing that through.
Great premiere episode. I might even rank it up there with Caretaker and Broken Bow in terms of premiere episodes, but this is recency bias talking. I want to see how the season plays out first.
