It's all Star Trek. I mean, I love TOS to pieces and SNW will no doubt scratch that itch somewhat but it's all Trek, man! No need to be exclusionist.

Not excluding anything, just saying that this show is the first live action show to really feel like Star Trek to me and not just a sci-fi show/movie that happens to bear the name the way Discovery did.

I guess the poll is going in reverse. I graded this episode a 9, when I think in the context of the poll I should have graded it a 2.

I loved this episode, but I'm hesitant to give it the top grade because I want to see what else they have to offer. This episode felt like the Star Trek I love, where there is an abundance of hope and optimism and just fun. Loved how much levity there was, especially Chapel's personality (Which might be the highlight of the season for me), M'Banga, and Spock. I also loved La'ann's story and look forward to seeing more.

I think what I enjoyed the most was this was a continuation of sorts of Pike's story from when he saw his own fate. That was one of my favorite scenes in Discovery Season 2, and to have that serve as the backbone of this premiere was genius. The mission on the planet was great, very Star Trek, and I loved Pike's campaign speech. I wish there were politicians who were like Pike today, not dividing us but trying to bring us together and just listening to both sides. I would vote for Pike any day. Ironically, he represents the optimism we all need in our lives and Mount did a great job bringing that through.

Great premiere episode. I might even rank it up there with Caretaker and Broken Bow in terms of premiere episodes, but this is recency bias talking. I want to see how the season plays out first.

I like having a story wrapped up and done in 45 minutes. There's no-one I don't like in the cast. Mount is really good. Peck's Spock seems different but I can adjust. La'an is good.

It felt properly old-school whilst retaining a newer sensibility.

USS Archer. Huh.

I think Chapel is a bit weird. Again, I just need to adjust.

It was really breezy though. Really easy to watch and a really strong episode 1 for a Star Trek show.

I need more time to process. I feel pleased though.

Really? Her name is Patel? Captain Patel? So they couldn't find an Indian actress to play that character but they found one to play the Vulcan one, huh?

It’s Batel, according to the captions. But even if the caption is accurate, that doesn’t invalidate your observations, as of this series we’re still at 0/3 with Khans and casting actors with Indian heritage.

Apparently that's a good thing now, since Voyager is the most streamed Trek evah!

Eh, I want Trek that challenges me, not Trek comfort food.

I'm convinced the reason VOY is the most streamed Trek is people in their 30s are the right age to have watched it as children.

I had an issue with that too. Pike had seemed to start to get it back together in Such Sweet Sorrow, Part II. But I guess he was just barely holding it in because there was a crucial mission to get through.

From a dramatic perspective, I understand why they start him at his lowest to build him back up. It's what DS9 did with Emissary, which is the other great Star Trek pilot episode.

Pike was always somewhat world-weary. At least, from what we saw in The Cage, etc. And introspective, yes. And introspective people can be outwardly happy at times, specially when you're in a leadership position.

Same. But, that is not going to happen. We live in the world of comfort food and it is being rewarded.

As a leader you have to put forward a brave face for your team, no matter what.

I wasn’t sure about the need to bring in T’Pring, either, but I liked how lively the interactions between her and Spock were. Too often since TOS the Vulcans have been portrayed as kinda dead-eyed and dull. This seemed more believable as a functional society of a secretly passionate people.
I like how the waiter pretty much told them to "Get a room". :rommie:

Ahh okay, Batel. Well, that's... different ;)

Hmm... wasn't the security chief in Discovery an Indian actress?

Gods, I really hated Voyager.

Google suggests that "Batel" is evidently a Scottish surname, a Croat surname, and a Hebrew surname.

And played by a French-Canadian with Italian heritage. With Melanie Scrofano’s hair, I gravitate towards Scottish?

Whatever the case, I’m hoping we see more of her in the show down the line.
