Spoilers Stargirl - Season One Discussion Thread

I thought it was a terrific episode last night. The battle was very well done. The only question I have is why Hourman bled when he was supposed to be invulnerable.

I still think Dr. Midnite is poorly cast. She shouldn't be out in the field until she can handle herself.

But the others did well and held their own against seasoned villains. And I'm also glad the villains got the upper hand. The fight went as it should have, and the new JSA did very well for their experience level.

Beth is amazing.

A complete nerd.

I feel so much sympathy for how tragic she is.

Dr. Midnight's (other) super power is to be able to see in the dark, after they drop a black light bomb.

Beth can beat up (temporarily) blind people fine.

She might need a crow bar.

Beth could be the contractually obligated CW "token" lesbian?

Although, LGBTQA... Beth as Asexual?

It's an under represented minority and she already presents as a drone.

She is a complete nerd, but being a superhero is a physically demanding job. She is not in any kind of physical shape and is not believable as Dr. Mid-Nite. In the comics, she's more of a badass.

So far, this show has steered away from tokenism and pandering. I think that's one of the reasons it is working so well. I figure that will eventually change because writers can't resist that.

Right now, Stargirl is the best first season show of the 2019-20 season, by far, in part because it is just being a superhero show. I hope they stay out of relationships altogether.

Probably not. The Wiki entry is probably all about his career as a professional boxer, not him moonlighting as superhero.

No, it was Wildcat's Wiki entry; its "Powers and Abilities" section was how Courtney and Yolanda learned about Wildcat's abilities. Whether it identified Wildcat as Ted Grant is unclear.

(I've been wondering, though -- does the CW version open with that full 20-second DC title card with CG-animated versions of the Justice League members?)
It doesn't, I think they do the same kind of character based DC logo the other DC/CW shows use.

This one was a lot of fun. I kind felt a bit sad for poor Courtney and the others once she had to around and try and get all the JSA stuff back.
Damn, Sportsmaster and Tigress are creepy. I was afraid Sportsmaster could end up being kind of cheesy in live action, but they actually pulled him off really well.
The big fight at the satellite facility was pretty cool.
Pat's little bit of reverse psychology on Courtney at the end was pretty good.

I just remember something I've been meaning to ask. For months now, all of the shows on my CW station have had the sound off from the video by a second or two, it's noticeable but not to extreme, and you can kind of ignore it if you don't look directly at the characters' mouths. Does anyone else have that? Is it everywhere, or just a local thing?

I haven't had it lately, but I think I've noticed a slight audio lag like that on The CW from time to time in the past, though only a fraction of a second.

Yeah, when they're talking the mouths are just bbbbaaarrreelllllyyyy off, it's just enough to be notice if you really look at them, but if you just look away it's not really that noticeable. I probably wouldn't even notice, but my mom mentioned it a couple times, and now I can't not notice it.

My local CW affiliate has had sound issues at various times. Don't remember the lag thing, but there have been mixing/balance problems, distortion, all kinds of crap. Hasn't happened in a while, though, so maybe they've finally made the leap to professional television broadcasting.

Had a problem at times when I used cable. Since I switched to internet only no problems.

I'm not much inclined to nitpick this show, but that did stick out. Moments after witnessing the exploding hockey puck, mind you, they just stand there and let the shuttlecock land at their feet? They were damned lucky it wasn't lethal.
My thoughts exactly. Have these kids never seen any superhero shows? If a villain throws something at you, scatter and dodge! Wildcat hears someone grunting behind her after she opens the overhead door and doesn't even turn around. (Tiger mom as Tigress. How original. /s) Hourman just stands there holding a car over his head. Are you going to do something with it? How about not warning a villain before you attack him by saying something like, "Hey, Gretzky!" Just hit him. Go watch The Incredibles: no monologuing! I know the actor who plays the Gambler is from Florida, but damned if that isn't the worst fake Southern accent I've heard in a long time. What is the deal with Mike? I hope he's going to have more of a story than just being the annoying smart-mouth younger stepbrother, because otherwise it's just a pointless dead end.

I must have missed something. Maybe Pat does have a superpower: showing up just when heroes need him. He showed up just before Starman died and had to pass on the staff. He showed up just after Courtney first fought Brainwave. Now he shows up just as the kids are about to get their butts handed to them by veteran supervillains. How did he know the locations of Courtney's fight and this battle anyway?

Yeah, it's just when I watch through cable, and it's all of the shows, not just Stargirl.
Do you notice it on other channels or just CW? I have a co-worker who has had lousy luck with getting a surround soundbar working right with his cable box without lag.

You're missing the point completely. It's not about motherhood. It's about ethnic background.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_parenting

My point is that the character's name is not "about" that, because the character originated in 1947, more than 60 years before the term "tiger parent" was coined; moreover, Paula Brooks/Tigress was white in the comics. The show seems to be following the lead of the animated Young Justice, which retconned her into Paula Nguyen.

I suppose it's possible that this particular show's portrayal of Paula's parenting could be influenced by the term, but in that case, the character name still came first. So it wouldn't be "tiger mom as Tigress," it would be "Tigress as tiger mom."

That kind of relationship is not based on chronological order. Tigress is the main facet of the role, so it would be the newer, subservient characteristic taking on the role of the original. Just like when Rhodey took over as Iron Man in the comics, it wasn't Iron Man as Rhodey even though IM obviously came first.

Did you pay any attention to the last episode? It's obvious that Paula Brooks is a domineering mom who demands that her daughter excel. Much more than "could be influenced."

I don't understand what that sentence means. And I'm not talking about how the show portrays the character. I'm merely clarifying that the character name was not derived from that portrayal, because the name predates the show by 73 years. I am only making a point about the source of the character name. That is not a refutation of whatever else you're talking about, so kindly do not talk down to me as if I'm an idiot simply because you mistake my point about the etymology of the name for a point about something else.
