Starfleet Academy & Robert Picardo: I have a theory...

The studio, streamer, producers, I feel like someone realized they might have trouble bringing the Trekkies over to Starfleet Academy, mostly aimed at the Discovery audience. I feel like Robert Picardo was brought it to be like, "Look, don't you want to see Picardo as the Doctor from Voyager? Come watch out show, come see Picardo!" I'm gonna be honest, I have no desire to see Star Trek reduced to a college show, but I'll tune in to watch Picardo.
Maybe.

But it’s just as likely The Doctor was put on SFA after it was decided that DIS was cancelled and future seasons weren’t happening.

I'm hoping they touch on the "Living Witness" Doctor. I wouldn't be surprised if he's somehow integrated into the original Voyager Doctor's program.

Still haven't seen Top Gun. I'm 45, I may hate it, who knows? I really didn't care for The Breakfast Club when I watched it in my late 30s. Some films you gotta watch when you're a teenager, I guess.

I hope Picardo plays The Doctor like he's the copy from Living Witness.

does anyone thing this series will be watchable? It all depends on who they are targeting, having the Doctor on the series is a gratuitous move to lure in people. I wouldn't expect that his presence is anything more than a momentary cameo.

This series, depending on who the writers and producers are, could be a soap opera, and probably might be. The preview is (to me at least) is not promising, as I recall a starfleet academy series was being discussed around the time Voyager was at full speed, THAT was the time to do it, not now where it will be (yet another) paint by the numbers series...

Star Trek has been skirting Soap Opera since TNG

All the preview shows is a bunch of quick character sketches not sure how anyone can get a true sense of the shows "promise" from that.

The Doctor seems a be a regular or reoccurring character, so probably not a cameo.

The names of the writers and producers are readily available on IMDB.

Academy has been floating around since the Harve Bennett days

If you want "Paint by numbers" look no further than Voyager.

Starfleet Academy was originally going to be a movie made for 1991, with re-cast Kirk, Spock and McCoy as cadets, and a framing story told by DeForest Kelley's McCoy. But the OG actors, not wanting to be replaced, called it "Police Academy in space" (which it was not) and turned fans against the concept.

If you liked Buffy and Smallville, you'll probably like this modern Starfleet Academy. It isn't aimed at die-hard TOS and TNG fans.
