Starfleet Academy Official Trailer

40 to 50 sometimes.
When I was in college, every class had the token older student or two. Meaning "over 30", a.k.a. "non-traditional students". But that's about it. Where I went to college, they were mostly 18-23 (taking five years instead of four wasn't uncommon where I went) and there were a lot of students in their mid-to-late-20s if they were dragging it out.

In a community college (which SFA isn't), it would be a little different. I worked at one for four years, and the age-range was more diverse because half the students were adult adults who hadn't been in school for a long time and for whatever reason had to or wanted to make a career change. There would also be senior citizens who wanted to take courses just to keep their minds active. But that's getting off-track.

For the most part, it's very-late-teens and 20s.

Just as an example, to be eligible for admission to a U.S. military academy, you must be at least 17 years old and not have passed your 23rd birthday by July 1st of the year you plan to enter. They may have some similar requirements in order to enter Starfleet (at least for human cadets).

This is most likely the case, but I think the shortage of Starfleet Officers in the time after The Burn might've led Starfleet Academy to relax those rules a little since everyone was cut off from each other until a few years ago, relative to SFA's time.

There are without a doubt several people older than 23 who would've wanted to join Starfleet but couldn't because of the circumstances. Sahil from "That Hope Is You" (DSC) is who I'm thinking of. Although, when we see him at the end of the season, he's a Lieutenant. So maybe they've let people in his situation bypass the Academy.

The upper age limit upon entry for the Royal Navy is presently 39, or 42 for officers.

I have a bad feeling they are going to write that one girl character like she is a superhero. They basically gave her a superpower. The MCU effect on Trek I suppose. I mean the character arcs pretty much write themselves.

The one kid who is a outsider who joins because of Giamatti will learn to love Starfleet. The "I got to become Captain" girl will learn to lighten up. The rich prince boy will learn to check his privilege, The shy girl will learn to become more assertive and superpower girl will learn to control her powers and not be scared of them, Klingon dude will show a non-Klingon cliche side to him and how he doesn't want to be a warrior.

When Garak wound Worf up about wanting to join Starfleet Worf's less racist objections were due to Garak's history as a spy. He did not seem to be under the impression that Garak couldn't join because of his age.

Nice to finally get a release date and a new trailer. To be honest, the trailer leaves me a bit cold, but then again, it’s only a trailer. Some of the line delivery seems rather stiff, especially from Zoë Steiner (Betazoid Tarima Sadal) and Karim Diane (Klingon Jay-Den Kraag), but also, surprisingly from Holly Hunter. I have a feeling I might end up finding her idiosyncratic Nahla Ake almost as grating as Pelia on Strange New Worlds, although I suspect her role here will be a bit more meaty.

Some random observations:
  • You think we’ll ever see San Francisco by day and not just with a picturesque sunset?
  • The transporter is apparently doing haircuts now. Nifty!
  • Are they good on uniforms variants now?

  • That’s a game of Tic Tac Toe on Paul Giamatti’s head, isn’t it?

  • I can already tell that we’ll get some anti-woke fuckers who’ll say the show is “feminizing Klingons” or some shit like that just because we now have a Klingon who sits with his legs crossed.

  • Is anyone able to read what it says beneath that cute bee (?) mascot?

  • Could the design for Braka’s costume here possibly be inspired by what the Tellarites wore on the original series?

Honestly, I’d be a happy camper if this is how Starfleet Academy shakes down. Nothing too fancy there, but if done competently this could be some good solid storytelling and classic Star Trek. Nothing more I’m asking of these shows, personally. :)

Laplings, which were almost extinct when Kivas Fajo had a rare one.

The "shy girl" you mentioned is a hologram only created a few weeks before. Her deal is awkward fish out of water - maybe autistic coded.

Interesting! What an incredibly obscure Trek reference. Seán Ferrick mentioned the laplings in his trailer review, but I missed that this is what he was talking about. Thank you!

As for Sam: Considering she’s supposed to be a freshly activated holographic being, I hope they won’t make the same mistake as the Voyager writers did with Kes, i.e. have a character who should have the mental maturity of a small child in the role of an adult, complete with sexual relationships etc. Urgh.

I'm not getting the real negative opinion here, since it seems pretty much what was advertised.

It seems like they're very much going with Caleb as being the "main character" of the series, with a personal connection to both Ake (the chancellor of the academy) and Braka (the villain of the season). Looks like he also gets the love interest (Zoë Steiner's character - Tarima Sadal), and that Tatiana Maslany is playing his mother.

I can see some people being somewhat let down by this, because it kind of cuts down on the "purity" of the concept of the Academy as a setting if you have a main character bringing so much baggage into the season. But I don't know if that many non-Trekkies will be able to hold the interest based upon the concept alone, and the idea of a special main character who has a lot of backstory in a school setting is pretty frequent (see Harry Potter).

That said, I'm hoping that most of what we're seeing here is from Episode 1, and that they cycle around the main cast in the later episodes, giving them all a chance to shine.
I mean - you kinda' nailed it here, what the criticism comes down to.

"Starfleet Academy" on it's own is just a hollow setting - like Hogwarts, or Prof Xaviers mutant school, or Nevermore.
What the show will be like in the end comes mainly down to the characters inside that setting - the Harry Potters, Wednesday, X-Men mutants.

And in this case - Caleb & the other students around him look like the most bland generic protagonist(tm) imaginable.
YMMV of course.

I mean, maybe. We have to see. What makes a character interesting isn't backstory, or some gimmick. It's how their personality shapes the decisions they make, and how - in turn - they have to deal with the consequences of their actions (and hopefully, grow over time - particularly for young characters).

By and large, Trek shows have always had the majority of their casts boring (DS9 being the major exception). Usually there's 1-2 outsider characters - a Spock, a Data, a Worf, a Seven - who makes different decisions than a generic Starfleet officer, who ends up being the fan favorite.

They have to take them out and kick the tires, so we see what happens, here. I would guess that a few of them will end up being duds, but that's completely fine.

Well, it doesn't look good. That's all I'm saying.

Still, if it's as bad as it seems it might finally send Kurtzman packing, we can close out SNW and make some new Treks in a couple years once the dust settles. And make them good.
Contain your exuberance. When Kurtzman leaves, it will be of his own accord. But even if such a scenario as you present were to happen, this show fails and Paramount actually does fire Kurtzman as a result, it will mean the end of Star Trek onscreen for the foreseeable future. It will be a lot longer than "a couple years" when a new show does come along, we're talking decades if ever.

Of course, a majority of Star Trek produced under Kurtzman's tutelage has been considered a success, with Section 31 being the only real misfire. So even if SFA is as bad as you think it will be, it will not be enough to "send Kurtzman packing" as you put it. Even if SFA fails, Kurtzman will still have done more good for Paramount than bad. He's not going to be removed against his will.

I am curious if they are going to make it clear she is self aware or will she be treated like a standard hologram at first. We did see a medical hologram on "Discovery" yet I got the impression he was still seen as a piece of tech and not a real person so it seems they must still be making non-self aware holograms even this far in the future. Only now they are in world were some like The Doctor are fully accepted a real people with self awareness,

The YouTube comments are brutal - almost none of them positive.

This is pretty much how Section31 was panning out.
Not a good omen.

Not a good omen.
For what?

People are already prejudging it. There's nothing that could be done to persuade the Debbie Downers online short of public humiliation of the production team.

This thread has proven that there are unwritten assumptions all across the board (pun intended).

Whatever omens are out there they are self inflicted by the fans.
