Bashir had the A story in Past Prologue and The Passenger.

I considered those, but are they really “Bashir focussed episodes”? I can see an argument for considering “Past Prologue”, but in “The Passenger” it‘s not even Bashir we see the majority of the time, since he‘s overtaken by Vantika. If anything, it‘s an Odo focussed episode.

It wasn't really that strange.

Appears on screen with no lines = background extra pay level, appears on screen with lines = speaking extra pay level, appears on screen with lines as a named character = secondary character pay level.

I meant it‘s strange insofar as the writers specifically introducing the individual bridge crewmembers by name, only to then almost never even revisit them. What does that creative decision have to do with the fact that there are several different tiers of performers on a television production?

Wasn't "Past Prologue" a Kira story? An old friend of hers is fighting the Federation as a second Occupation and her loyaltes are divided.

Past Prologue is where Garak and Bashir are first introduced to each other.

Technically, but it's still Siddig so I'd say it counts.

I meant it‘s strange insofar as the writers specifically introducing the individual bridge crewmembers by name, only to then almost never even revisit them. What does that creative decision have to do with the fact that there are several different tiers of performers on a television production?

Because writers/directors often bump up the tier of actors they like or are friends with by adding speaking lines or naming the character.

And no, that's not an assumption as I am friends with several directors/writers who actively do that sort of thing when their friends happen to get a bit part in something they're working on.

This was a really obvious beat in the action, though, it wasn't just Ake saying "Fire on that ship, Lieutenant Ya" or "Lay in a course to Earth, Mister Dandridd ..." - in light of the fact that we only saw these people, maybe twice, it came off as really odd, especially after they made a big deal of Becky Lynch playing the Tactical Officer

I'll give you "THE PASSENGER" for Bashir, but Bashir was not part of the A story for "PAST PROLOGUE" was definitely Kira's. Bashir and Garak was the B side of that episode.

They made a big deal about Becky Lynch playing the tactical officer for the same reason Disney made a big deal about Carrier Ann Moss playing a Jedi in Acolyte.

To draw people in.

Heck, I’ve long wondered about the bridge crew for the other one or two shifts. Who is captain, science, XO, comms, navigator, engineer, doctor, helm, tactical when all the first shift crew is in bed or calls in sick or off on their honeymoon?

Lower Decks is the first show I’ve seen that has even touched upon the idea that there is a ‘beta shift,’ but every ship has to have at least one completely different bridge crew, if not three complete crews to cover three shifts, *and* some extras to cover gaps! (Like ‘engineer away at a conference’ or ‘science officer eaten by tribbles’.).

But gosh, in shows where characters like Harry Kim, Travis Mayweather and half the bridge crew of the Discovery are lucky if they can get one speaking line in an entire season, I guess that would be a challenge.

I think there's only Captain. Who ever is in the chair on those other shifts isn't the Captain.

In TNG it was often Data who was captain during the night shift as he didn't sleep. I think Dr Crusher was night shift captain occasionally as well. In Voyager I remember Harry Kim sitting in the captain's chair.

We're always seeing new people in the other bridge positions as someone takes over their seat whenever a cast member leaves the bridge.

But when there's a crisis all the regular cast members get up and take their posts, so we'd never be watching the beta shift for an episode. Except in a story like TNG's Disaster.

DS9. It had a whole slew of guest and recurring characters that were just as beloved if not more so than many of the series regulars.
