Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Makes you wonder if Section 31 still exists in the future. I mean if things got as bad as they keep saying then it makes sense they would not only keep Section 31 but not even have it be something that operates in the secret. At least not compared to how it operated during DS9 time.
I gathered the implication was Section 31 died with Sloan.

Which could very easily be avoided but Paramount or Viacom or whatever refuses to listen to the actual fans.

The problem is, "the actual fans" never agree on anything, as the internet proves every day.

Seriously, we're a famously opinionated bunch, with our own priorities and expectations where Trek is concerned. Don't be believe me? Ask a bunch of Trekkies what they think of TMP, or DS9, or whether Star Trek is military or not. One fan's favorite Trek show or movie or episode, the one they think epitomizes the very best of Trek, is junk according to another, equally devoted fan.

Fandom does not not speak with one voice and never has. Especially nowadays when you have entire generations of Trekkies who grew up on different eras of Trek, shaping their expectations of what Trek should be.

So "listening to fans" begs the question: which fans? Old-school TOS fans? TNG fans? Folks who think DS9 is the greatest Trek show ever, or those who find it unwatchable? Young folks who love DISCO and SNW? Canon purists? Folks who prioritize the world-building, or the topical allegories, or the messages, or the science, or the entertainment value? Who?

There's no such thing as "the actual fans." Just lots of different fans with different opinions.

They should listen to the fans who have watched TNG's "The Shades of Grey" multiple times. You know someone loves Star Trek when they will watch the dumpster fires multiple times and who will no doubt watch it yet again someday. :)

The implication on DS9 at more than one point, was that Section 31 did not Exist.

Sloan was just fucking with Julian.
The only time that was even mentioned as a possibility was at the end of "INTER ARMA ENIM SILENT LEGES". And that was clearly Koval spreading misinformation so Sloan could escape. (He fired the shot that 'vaporized' Sloan, which we know was his escape route because we see Sloan talk to Bashir at the end. Also, he appears again later in the final arc.)

Section 31 exists.

If they get to explaining that, then yeah, I'll be fine with it. But if it isn't by the end of series, it'll clearly be a case of them dropping the ball massively on an established species from the classic era.

Let it be noted that we didn't get an "in-universe" explanation for the Klingon's makeover for twenty-plus years. Did the Powers That Be massively drop the ball because they waited until Enterprise to finally explain why the Klingons suddenly looked different in TMP?

Trust me, that was much more drastic change than anything SFA has done to Betazoids.

But we rolled with it. :)

Harry Potter is woke.
Though JK Rowling certainly isn't.

Not like they're a secret like they were in DS9 in any of the modern productions, anyway.

Picard S3 does suggest Section 31 is still around in 2401 or whenever that season is actually set in.

This. 100 percent this. No after the fact explanation makes the TMP changes make sense.
Even Harris in the mid-22nd century wears ominous black clothes with a leathery texture. :p
Officer uniform.*

*Curious who will catch the reference.

Yeah, you all know how this works. You have to wait twenty-five years after a redesign is introduced before complaining about it, given it was okay for TMP to change the Klingons given that got explained in 2005.

Hey, I don't make the rules, I just follow the precedent the rest of you set.
