Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Starfleet EV suits have a female computer voice in the 32nd century, so there's already precedent for different computers having different voices even within Starfleet.
Ah good point I didnt clock that.

We see some space battles it could be her voice is from its active service days in flashbacks before the Athena is repurposed as the academy

I can see using different voices to serve different purposes. If you're announcing that the course on stellar cartography is about to start in 5 minutes, you use one voice. If you're going to battle stations and you need to report to your post, you use another.

I wondered if they considering asking for the rights to use a AI version of Majel Barrett's voice much like how Disney owns the rights to James Earl Jones voice to do Darth Vader.

It just occurred to me the Cardassian dreadnought missile did not use the Cardassian computer voice from DS9 so multiple interface voices in service is not so unusual I suppose.

The only thing weird is the phrasing in the casting announcement.

That's because Torres got rid of the Cardassian computer voice because it annoyed her. She gave it her voice.

But yeah, having different computer voices shouldn't be a problem. We can do that today.

Can‘t check the episode itself right now, but Memory Alpha tells me that “A male voice was used instead of regular Cardassian computer voice actress Judi Durand on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine so as to be easily distinguishable from Roxann Dawson as the Maquis program voice.” So yeah, the Cardassian dreadnought did indeed have a difference voice than the computer on Deep Space Nine. :)

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve watched that particular episode, but was the voice perhaps changed because the Bynars were working on / messing with the computer of the Enterprise?

That's quite possible. Just rewatched it: There are some original voice lines in there as well.
IIRC, in one of the alternate timelines, the voice was also male (Yesterday's Enterprise? Parallels? Future Imperfect? One of those...)
And of course in TOS there was that upgrade that made the computer flirty, dear... :D

The should have Stewart do the computer voice. KInd of like the idea that Picard's French accent still survives far into the future.

I have not yet recovered from the tentacles trauma of The OA but I'm glad to see Brit Marling join the cast.

For those who don't know The OA - it had a pretty amazing season one that also included Alice Krige and Jason Isaacs.

Edit: Oh, and I forgot Ian Alexander (Gray Tal on DSC) and Rosalind Chao in a guest role. Lots of trek actors on that one!)
