Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

It's a military school. I doubt it would be ran like a regular college. Because as we all know Starfleet is a military. Well Navy to more exact.

Most people go there between about 18 and 22 or so, and Riker has an MSc from there, so it's probably similar to a college undergrad.
Bashir was a Lt. JG after doing the (additional?) SF med school. So an Ensign could be like a 4 year BSc program, then as a Lt. JG you have an MSc. A full Lt. would be similar to a PhD, then a Lt. Cdr. would be a subgroup leader, and so on.

The aliens from The Lights of Zetar come to mind as another naturally occurring photonic based sentient species.
Well Spock said that there were 10 distinct life units; but the Zentarians themselves said they were the last 100 corporeal beings on their Planet before the disaster; and that there Wills were so strong their life force could not be not snuffed out by the disaster that killed the rest of the planet's population.
^^^
So I don't know that I'd call them naturally occurring or evolving per se. They effectively came across as some sort of freak of nature.

It's an institution within Starfleet. You go there to train to be a Starfleet officer. There's no strict "before or after" schooling.

so its kinda like the millatary the navy and the marines combined to one

i thought it was like the 1 collage and university since in the star trekverse i do not think they have universitys and collages anymore in the future

just like how in the future they do not have money anymore either which was mentioned on star trek 4 when the original crew time traveled to the past

Hell, not everyone in a Starfleet uniform is even a member of Starfleet. I think Kosinski in "Where No One Has Gone Before(TNG)" wears the uniform but as a propulsion expert with a very unique rank insignia is more of an honorary Starfleet member than a full-blown officer.

Probably an enlisted man who went to a service school, instead of the full academy training, that is how the USN does it. USN calls them A schools and C schools. You become rated and have a rating symbol as part of the rank insignia on the dress uniform. This is the Electrician's Mate (EM) rating badge that I wore on my dress blues.

Chapel in SNW is a civilian but wears a full uniform which bafflingly has the rank of commander on it but I assume that's just costume error weirdness or maybe it's meant to be some sort of provisional or non com rank.

Heck on TOS they even gave Khan a Starfleet uniform. Christopher also wore one in "Tomorrow is Yesterday."
