Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

I don't think the Academy series was in development that long. If all references to the Klingons were intentionally removed beginning with S3 of Disco because of plans for SFA, that would mean this show has been in development since at least 2019, when Disco S3 would have begun writing. Which I'm pretty sure is not the case.
I can't recall my source but I was aware of academy series rumours circa Discovery season 2. I remember during the Pike accident flashforward, wondering if the costumes were ones designed for that show.

And then thinking the same in the Tilly and cadets episode of Discovery season 4.

Wrong both times!

Have they mentioned the origin of the photonic species the student is from, I just rewatched Bride of Chaotica and I wonder if they're using that race?

I think it’s unclear whether SAM being from a photonic species (called the Kasqians, by the way) means they somehow naturally developed or if they were programmed. They keep saying she’s recently been activated, which leads me to believe they are still somehow programmed as opposed to “born”. The photonic lifeforms from “Bride of Chaotica” didn’t seem like they were programmed, but a form of life that had naturally developed as photonic. But also, the fact that they gave her an acronym as a name also leads me to believe she’s programmed.

If they bring back the Chaotica aliens from the 5th dimension, maybe they'll see Picardo and address him as President of Earth :D

My guess is this alien species that is all holograms will be from a species that first developed them to be slaves or tech helpers. They evolved and formed their own culture.

IMHO DIS really missed an amazing opportunity in Season 3 to have the future Federation mostly made up of Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, etc. Nothing would showcase the drift over the centuries better than the Federation being made up of primarily former enemies. It would also make it clear that the Federation was ultimately an idea, not tied to the human bloodline (though Earth briefly not being a part within the narrative helped here).

Also, it kind of mirrors history, where the various nations which considered themselves the heirs to Rome had very little to do with the Romans in a genealogical sense.

I'm sure they decided to not due this mainly due to makeup costs, but still.

Brilliant idea!

This might be a minority position, but I'd rather not have DIS cast appear much. With these modern short seasons gimmick cameos really stick out like a sore thumb, and don't add much, IMHO.

The one exception I'd put in there is Stamets. The man started out as an academic before DIS Season 1. He really makes more sense in an Academy setting. Not to mention he can be a raging asshole, which sets up for great conflict with the students.

Let's at least hope the producers left the staff shrink from the writers room of DISCO behind when that show ended. We don't need a sequel to STAR TREK: THERAPY.

(With the officers, anyway. The cadets... well, they are in training to become professionals, so it at least would make sense if they have a breakdown or two during the first few episodes. Definitely not later, since they should wash out if that happened more.)
