Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

It may not be a logical stance, but I'll be pretty annoyed if SFA sticks their fingers into the arguably still-wet concrete of Ben Sisko's ultimate fate.

I'd much rather that concrete never fully set.

Excited for the stories, the Academy ship and Sisko related mysteries. Disappointed on the emphasis on the Klingons. Fucking again with the Klingons? :brickwall:
Meh. We saw neither hide nor hair nor headridge of any Klingons in the last three seasons of Discovery and they've barely been a factor in Strange New Worlds. Frankly, in the 32nd century, they've been conspicuous with their absence. Besides, they're part of the Star Trek tapestry. Complaining about including Klingons in a Star Trek show is like complaining that they're putting Star Trek in your Star Trek.

And I will.

I'm going to be honest... I don't trust them to deal with such a huge part of DS9. I'd rather them not try to mess with the greatest captain in the franchise.

DISCO didn't do anything AT ALL with the Klingons starting with season 3... not even a mention, really.

PICARD was also absent Klingons for its entire run, except for Worf in season 3. But he is such an integral part of the TNG cast, he couldn't NOT be included, if Dorn was available.

SNW has only done a few with Klingons.

I actually think it makes sense for ACADEMY to deal with the Klingons, particularly since the 32nd century has been entirely absent of them.

I'm sure I'm alone in my opinion but I stand by it. 32nd century was better without them.

Daniels in "Zero Hour(ENT)" did say that the Klingons eventually joined the Federation by the time of the Battle of Procyon V circa 2570, so this new cadet might shed some light on when the Empire finally did so. If we don't see too many Klingons in the new series I'm fine with it.

I've noticed that about you.
Hey, fans complain about Kurtzman all the time. They have their thing and I have mine.

🥱 Except SAM/S.A.M. as a name for an artificial life form is so ubiquitous in sci-fi, it’s almost a cliché at this point:
  • The comic (and later animated series) Cannon Busters features a robot girl named S.A.M. (and precedes Mass Effect by a couple of years)
  • the game Red Faction: Armageddon (2011) has an AI guide called S.A.M.
  • in the game Observation (2019) you take the role of an AI called SAM
  • S.A.M. is the name of an android in an eponymous 2016 sci-fi movie
  • it’s the name of a robot in a 2014 graphic novel series of the same name
  • it’s the name of an enemy AI in the 2024 game Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
  • S.A.M. is the name of a mech in the graphic novel Amulet
  • Heck, there was a “Sam the robot” (short for “Super Automatic Machine”) on the Sesame Street way back in 1972!
  • not “SAM” per se, but the AI character in 2013’s “Her” is named “Samantha”
So at worst Starfleet Academy is a little unimaginative with the naming of the character. And at best they are basically continuing a sci-fi tradition. But hey, don’t let facts get in the way of a perfectly good opportunity to whine about the current Trek writers, I guess.
Star Trek also had sapient holograms decades before Mass Effect even existed.

Klingons are one of those things where there's absolutely no way to win at this point. Every time Klingons pop up everyone quotes that old "Star Trek: So Very Tired" bit from The Simpsons and exasperatedly "Again with the Klingons." But then Disco did completely abandon the Klingons when it moved to the 32nd century and one of the more common questions asked by fans was "where are the Klingons?"

The franchise is damned if the do and damned if they don't when it comes to the Klingons.

It's obvious that the reason that they didn't mention them is because they wanted the writers of SFA to have full freedom when creating the 32nd century Klingon status quo. No reason to trip them up with a throwaway line.

I don't think the Academy series was in development that long. If all references to the Klingons were intentionally removed beginning with S3 of Disco because of plans for SFA, that would mean this show has been in development since at least 2019, when Disco S3 would have begun writing. Which I'm pretty sure is not the case.

Season 3 and almost all of season 4 aired before there was any word this was even going to be a show. We didn't even who the characters were going to be until long after DISCO ended. So I don't think giving ACADEMY open ground was a reason for keeping the Klingons' status unknown during those seasons. (Season 5, maybe. But I doubt they had that kind of foresight, especially given how lackluster the DISCO writers were.)

Most likely scenario is the ACADEMY people saw there was no mention of the Klingons, there were a number of fans who questioned their very odd absence of even a mention, and decided to add one to the cast.

Probably went something like this:

ACADEMY writers: "Hey, executives. I just read a lot of fans have missed the Klingons. DISCO didn't even mention them in the 32nd century."

Executives: "Okay?"

ACADEMY writers: "Well, we can add one to the cast of our new show! I guarantee it will be a hit because people love Worf."

Executives: "Do it."

Exactly. I am hopeful that the Klingons will actually be additive to the story and not present because it's checking off a Star Trek box.

That's my biggest thing with these stories of create something additive to the story and what the writers are wanting to tell.

Besides being expected what do Klingons add to the story?

Well, given the Klingon cadet in this series appears to be science division (based on his blue uniform) we could at least get to see another aspect of Klingon culture outside the warrior ethos that has been almost exclusively the sole focus of Klingons up to this point.

Yep. The only other Klingon scientist I can remember offhand is the one working with Dr. Crusher in "Suspicions(TNG)."

As much as I’m trying to forget those episodes were a thing, there was also an interesting Klingon scientist character in that Enterprise two-parter about why in TOS they didn’t have their headpieces on.

IIRC, Jay-Den is not just a scientist, though, he’s actually on track to become a Starfleet medic.

Also, as much as I was underwhelmed by what Discovery had to tell about the 32nd century, not having Klingons was actually a good thing in my book. So yeah, hopefully they’ll do something interesting with them or rather Jay-Den in this.
