Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Has anyone heard anything about when this will available on SkyShowTime in the Netherlands?
Good question...

It also says something about just how small and insignifant Trek can be... Can you image a new Star Wars series or a new GOT-series being released and *NOT* being able to be watched in The Netherlands?

I sincerely hope it will be available soon! Just like I hope SkyShowTime will incorporate all Trek-series soon now that they've left Netflix over here...

So two episodes in and I was hoping to see ANY of the old Starfleet Academy locations shown in TNG (and that one VOY episode), but nope not yet. Surely some parts of it have still gotta be there right?

Where's the audience gone though? The episodes are rumoured to cost 8-10 million per episode. Released for free on YouTube and as now......

They try to give it away free and get a paltry 77K viewers. Meanwhile RLM do a DS9 retrospective and release it at roughly the same time:

Free sampling often doesn't get a lot of views, people are paying for it already who are likely watching it. Pirates will do whatever they do already.

In my case, why watch YouTube's compression when I can see it in 4K?

Its getting review bombed, what else is new.

I actually thought the pilot was OK, for what that's worth - and I did watch it on YouTube. As for negative reviews, it's better to provoke a reaction than not - even if that reaction is negative. The absolute worst reaction is none at all, or that was 'OK'.

But those viewing figures must be a cause for concern. This is a decades old franchise with global recognition and no barrier to watching it - and it cannot get hardly any views. I mean, they want younger fans, not old dudes like me - so you'd hope the YT figures would be higher. The live stream viewership was even lower, just 1300 people. Surely its Paramounts strategy to get people to watch this and then want to subscribe?

Trying to grow subscriptions is increasingly difficult across the streaming landscape. If you cannot spark engagement with a free offering, I'd say the bosses will be very concerned.

And this proves...what? SA was destined to be review-bombed to death beforehand... I know people like Nerdrotic like to bring these numbers up as proof that ST is dead, but in the end, it doesn't prove a lot, except that ST has a rotten fanbase, like most franchises have...

Looking at the Paramount Plus channel, it seems like almost all of the top clips are trailers. Full episodes do not do well. Indeed, I think the YouTube algorithm might bury 1+ hour videos if you don't have a habit of watching them.

There are currently no other Star Trek episodes available on YouTube. I know Paramount Plus has dropped them before - I guess they take them down eventually - so I can't really compare view counts. But Trek content is still getting big numbers on their channel. A nine-minute Ethan Peck interview somehow got 1.7 million views two months ago. And the trailer for SFA itself got 7.9 million views.

I think the problem is partially most people don't watch longform content on YouTube. I do, but when I'm doing "longs" I essentially treat it as a podcast, just listening to a video, which isn't something you'd ever do with a visual show like Star Trek.

Those episodes were filmed in California while this show is filmed in Toronto.

I haven't watched it yet, will do so in the weekend. Quick non spoiler question: Did they explain the Betazoid not having black eyes? Or was it a visual retcon/they ignored continuity / TPTB didn't bother to do research?

Ugh. Just skimming through YouTube for music videos and I see one after another hate videos directed towards SA. Not even bothering to look at any of them since the thumbnails are all saying how the show is trash and how Trek is dead (again). I suspect a great deal of it is just clickbait to get some views and likes for monetization. Hate sells.

And is it just me, or is it striking that almost all of these hate videos feature a person of color in their thumbnail?
