Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Skimmed the red carpet. I was a bit surprised at Sandro Rosta's accent (or lack thereof). I had heard he was a graduate of the Oxford School of drama, so I was expecting a Brit. Seems like he jumped between the UK and Canada, and ended up with a Canadian accent.

Actually, time travel was made illegal by that time, after the Temporal Wars and the Temporal Accords were made. Discovery's very appearance in that century (at the early part of season 3) was even a plot point.

After the burn, you'd think that no one left had the power or scope to enforce the temporal accords galaxy wide.

Kate representing Prodigy. :)

Robert Picardo played a cab driver:

Marc Alaimo was in Total Recall as well.

George and Gracie must have had lots of sex if the two of them alone was enough to bring them back from extinction.
They covered that in the Lower Decks comics, Starfleet had to send a few more ships back to gather a breeding population.

I'm almost sure Jayden is gonna be the first gay Klingon (which is a good thing!)
Doubt it given we don't see any other Klingons around.

More likely he's Xenosexual like most everybody in Star Trek to varying degree's.

I dont think someone has to be exclusively into their own race to qualify as heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual I'm pretty sure genetalia is enough for the categorisation.

Wouldn't xenosexual be for someone exclusively into alien races and not fellow members of their own race?

Its only fitting to end a Star Trek ending with the appropriate song:

Early review of the premiere episode(s) by someone named LordCrust in the TrekMovie comment section sounds rather promising:

Holly. Hunter. Wow.

I can confirm that I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The first episode was also quite long. Unclear if I watched one or two episodes. I’m quite excited. I’m an admitted Discovery enjoyer but this show made me feel like a kid again. Dare I say the pilot is the most evocative of the ‘90s era for its pervasive sense of presenting a sense of newness. It’s giving bio neural gel packs, it’s giving look at this thing called a holodeck. It’s telling you that you’re in the most advanced and new place in the Federation and that’s where you should want to be.

Also, the AV experience was nuts—Dolby Cinema setup.

[…] The ship feels like the Enterprise D. Glorious and comfortable and futuristic.

We hadn’t really had that feeling of “newness” in Trek since way back when The Next Generation premiered. That sense of a fresh look at the future of this universe we would want to live in, with (mostly) brand new characters (mostly) untangled from previous entries in the canon. If this actually manages to evoke that feeling I have when I watch early TNG, where space is still vast and full of unexplored potential, then I will be a happy Trekkie.

Looking forward to more early reviews. Apparently attendees of the premiere are allowed to talk about it tomorrow.

I've been wondering when the review embargo is going to end. Usually it's a good sign if reviews drop a week before (or longer) and quite a bad sign if they don't drop the embargo until the last minute.

Again with the abbreviation discussion? Just don’t use “STD” to troll, that’s all I care about. ;)

All throughout the red carpet event yesterday they were playing music that sounded an awful lot like it might be the score to the upcoming show. At least I wasn’t able to place it anywhere else. Could also be Discovery music, I guess, but I think it’s new stuff. Sounds very much like Jeff Russo. And track 4 in particular almost sounded like it could be the show’s theme music. Could also just be what we hear when we first see the Athena, I suppose.

Here’s all the tracks as I’m hearing them in there, complete with a short description and my thoughts about it …

Track 1: Ominous, sinister, possibly accompanying the flyby over a far away colony? Perhaps a flashback to Caleb Mir’s troubled childhood?
Track 2 (continued here and then here): At first very similar to the first track, features a recurring melody, and then a more dramatic pulsing beat and drums.
Track 3: Jerry Goldsmith’s Klingon theme. Maybe meeting Jay-Den Kraag for the first time?
Track 4: Includes the Star Trek theme at the start. Sounds very heroic and adventurous. Could this perhaps be the Starfleet Academy theme song (or play parts of it)?
Track 5: Upbeat and action-y.
Track 6: Whimsical and playful. Featuring flutes. Maybe introducing SAM?
Track 7: More ominous and sinister. Curious string swells.
Track 8 (continued here and here): Repeat of track 2?
Track 9: Ethereal with choral voices and heroic strings. Think Rivendell in LOTR. Introducing Betazoid Tarima Sadal?
Track 10: Whimsical and playful again.
Track 11: Track 2 again?
Track 12: Action-y and suspenseful.
Track 13: Action-y and suspenseful, still track 12?
Track 14 (continued here): More whimsical and playful cues. Features the Star Trek theme at the end.
Track 15: Ominous and quiet.
