Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Already linked and discussed here a couple of days ago. :)

It remains to be seen what they do with the premise of setting it in the far-away future of Discovery’s 32nd century, but I have to say, after initially being really sceptic about it (mostly because I was disappointed by Discovery season 3–5, I guess) I have really warmed to the concept. I like how much it gives the writers the opportunity to shake things up and re-introduce us to old players far removed from when we last saw them. But also exactly what Kurtzman is saying in these interview bits: The “Burn” backstory makes for an interesting setting to look at young people who’ll inherit this world. There’s a neat analog in how the young people of the 32nd century — who are tasked to basically rebuild a world that they have never known because they’ve been brought up during the fallout of the Burn — are mirroring today’s “Generation Corona”, who missed parts of their adolescence due to the pandemic. If done right this could wonderfully explore some interesting questions.

That whole episode was a masterclass in how not to place Federation observers on primitive planets.
Star Trek: Insurrection is another.
Nuke the site from orbit. ;)
Archaic.
Photon detonate the site from orbit. ;)
Crusher's biggest mistake was not leaving Liko to die on the planet to begin with. I'm sorry to say it, but Picard was right... by bringing him aboard, Crusher made an already difficult situation far worse. And now the Mintakans know about alien life, other worlds, and greater technology long before they were meant to.
QFT.
Even if they were meant to. Not like every civ. is going to make it to modernity.

:guffaw:

It's the least interesting part of Trek.
And, indeed, the whole "Federation Utopia" is an extremely overstated part of Star Trek. TOS certainly never tried to depict the Federation as some sort of pristine utopia. That was sort of the status quo at the beginning of TNG, but that started to slip away before the end of the first season when the Romulans returned along with the first indications of the Borg. Early in the second season, Starfleet is building Starbases for the specific purpose of keeping the Romulans in line and that's even before we meet the Borg for the first time. After that, we have Borg, Klingon civil wars, Cardassians, and of course Romulans, you name it.

DS9 went out of its way to show how imperfect the Federation's so-called Utopia was. Voyager couldn't tell us anything about the Federation because none of the show actually took place in the Federation. Enterprise took place before the Federation. So at the end of the day, we have about one season of television that actually depicts a Gene Roddenberry-esque Federation utopia.

*applauds.*
