Once one becomes a starfaring culture, is there any real limit on how long said culture/race can survive in some form?
In this universe? Heck, I'm thinking that if the run was long enough, that dinosaur would come looking for La'An with a score to settle.
I think everyone here would say that Sol V had to be destroyed to protect the future and everyone here would have made that choice. But the harder decision for the Captain would have been the opposite, that he couldn't wipe out a civilization just to protect his own...
Not just his own, thousands of others....there would be so many civilizations that would rise and fall between then and the 23rd...that would cease to exist from history if he stopped them.
Annorax would have been in awe of him if he had stopped them...

He wasn't just protecting his own civilization, he was protecting everything that happened in that area of the galaxy over the next sixty-five million years.
It was a hell of a hunch to play. I didn't think they had the writing chops to pull off something like this.
But ultimately, the easier/safer choice right?
I don't think there was an easy or safe choice. Pike has to watch while equipment from his ship is stolen and used to eradicate two civilizations. I think that is something that would give me nightmares for the rest of my life, whatever the outcome.
If that became canon down the road I wouldn't mind it.
I think the other thing I love was the acknowledgement of how powerful the Enterprise is. It seemed the ships got nerfed as the franchise progressed. This one small battery wiped out two civilizations. Destroying one planet and pushing another out of its orbit.

The original story outline for what everyone calls Planet of the Titans ended completely backwards from the version that's always repeated: the Enterprise is flung millions of years into the future, where they find a galaxy full of super science of Titans-level, even in our own solar system, and it is they who are the backwards primitives in this strange new world. I like that better than the silly Promethean ending.
Not to mention The Martian Chronicles, in which some humans become Martians.
