I don't think it's ever explained how someone temporarily "turns off" the universal translator when they want to be heard in their own language. Is it a telepathic thing where they think hard for it to be turned off? Because we never see anyone say "Computer, deactivate my Universal Translator for the next 1 minute" or whatever before speaking in a non-English language.
It's mentioned that the Universal Translators work by interpreting brain wave patterns.

No. Pointing to a single scene from a single show as "evidence" is flimsy.
It was two episodes of Prodigy, and an episode of Voyager.

There goes the neighborhood!! :ack:
Not just the neighborhood

We're on a Trek board. Most of us, including the poster in question, know that Uhura is from Kenya even if played by Americans
Interesting that so far, the TOS, Kelvin and SNW actors playing a Russian and a Scot, whether they were from those nation states attempted the regional accent. But characters playing a Somalian and Kenyan did not make the attempt, apart from the actor playing M'Benga who I think is Nigerian. A diversity of accents would make Trek less like a future USA in space.
If there is a TNG reboot, Picard should not have a Yorkshire accent. I bet the French were insulted lol

I'm kicking myself now for not realizing Babs fake accent is an attempt, as a Nigerian, to play a Kenyan.

I think Picard was popular in France so I don't think they were insulted much

As the voice was probably dubbed BY a french actor - yeah, I doubt they noticed how 'British' Patrick Stewart played him. Hell they may have adjusted some of his dialogue in the French dub as well.

What are their censorship rules like? TV in Europe seems a bit freer on the nudity front, but what about language?
I know in Britain they're not allowed to use profanity on television except for late night shows, or "post watershed hour" as they put it. It wouldn't surprise me if France had a similar policy.
