Now that is how you do a trailer. Give us enough to wet our appetites but not so much that you give the story or main villain away. If only more trailers were like this.

The Captain has an unusual Vulcan hairstyle :D

Sooo it turns out when Kirk became (acting) Captain, Spock and Uhura were already with him... not sure if I like it or not :/

That reveal was very similar to the one in Disco S3 though, with the Titan people hiding under helmets:shrug:

Well, I’d certainly be interested to know what the heck happened during the intervening generations on that ship, to cause all that.

It’s never been a secret that Kirk and Spock are my favourite characters in the franchise, and this episode has done nothing to change that. If anything, it reinforced the idea that they almost need each other. The way they play to each other’s strengths was highlighted beautifully here.

I’ll even admit to getting a little emotional at the very end, with Pike calling Kirk “Captain.” Just hearing the words “Captain Kirk” was enough to make my eyes well up, just a little. Paul Wesley also did a terrific job as Kirk. He improves with every appearance, and this was absolutely his best performance yet. I could definitely see the beginnings of the character we know from TOS.

The rest of the plot was solid as well. The Scavengers and their ship were interesting, and the reveal of who they were was both unexpected and thought-provoking, while also adding fascinating lore to the Trek timeline. Pelia continues to steal every scene she’s in, and I loved getting a glimpse of her quarters.

It’s definitely my favourite episode of the season so far.

I thought it was the most enjoyable episode of the season, but I have mixed reactions to the plot twist of they were all humans. It seems like the point was to make Kirk realize he would have hard decisions, but everything he did was justifiable because the scavenger attacked them and ate up a planet. Making them humans seemed like a sympathetic leap but I'm not sure how earned it was. I think they needed to come up with a better reason for Kirk to feel guilty if that was the point they were making, but they could have stopped it at Kirk being able to lead his crew through a dire situation.

I'm still giving this episode a 9 mainly because everyone got something to do, and I loved the use of the rotary phone. They basically don't exist anymore, but man it was like going back to childhood. Also, Palia has become a star this season. I didn't think it was the right match initially, but Carol Kane really is killing it on this show. I also really liked that while it did focus on Kirk, everyone had a big moment and it was like a cross of Starship Down meets Voyager's Bliss.
