He had no business being out there. No business!
Given he dug into an alien backpack, pulled out a glowing object of unknown origin, and then held it up to his face. I think we can all agree that he was very much not the brightest bulb in the house.

Only way it could have been worse is if the words "Pick Me Up" were printed on the side.

Yeah tricorder first. Touch later. This is Star Trek, not Prometheus.

Circuit breakers were going to be fitted on Thursday but it was either capacity for health and safety or enough memory for holodeck porn. The ship has voted unanimously. Ditch the circuit breakers.
Holoporn! "Computer, play file 'Tinto Brass Caligula Ship Orgy 1979'."

"Enter when ready".

(looks thru arch, smiles) "God bless you, Montgomery Scott. It gets lonely out in space."

As well as circuit breakers resulting in panels exploding on board starships.

Utopia my ass.
What makes you think circuit breakers would actually stop panels from exploding given that's caused by high energy feedback from multiple different types of sci-fi particles?

My absurd belief that a supposed utopia would value life enough to try and protect it's crew.

You're working off a faulty assumption there.

Because for all we know, the current safety status of these things is as safe as they can get within the limits of current technology.

The circuits failures cause the rocks to fall
Hey now, Cordry Rocks serve an essential function on Starships.

I liked this episode. It had some flaws but it got us back to the best parts of SNW which is exploring, science and action rolled together.

So I rewatched this one tonight, and I'm not going to reiterate everything everyone has said about it already. On first watch, I did like this episode bc of it's horror elements as well as the advancing character arcs, and after rewatching and before grading it, I have a few points to make:
1) So once Gamble was attacked, Christine and La'an took him outside to be beamed up and then came back. The rest of the landing party was inside. So the only reason N'Jal was killed was because he tried to exit by himself? Okay. Got it. I'd actually missed that during my first bleary-eyed watch early Thursday morning. I kept thinking "how'd they get him out?!"
2) I liked that little look Christine gave La'an and then Spock when they were all talking about the "preservers" theory and La'an said "fascinating!" See, I like those little moments and... er, glances ;) And aww now when I see Gamble in all his fresh-faced innocence breathe "ancient astronauts!!!" my heart weeps a bit. About that, I really don't think we've seen the last of this character. Whether or not they follow up on the last scene, he's too good to let go. But what do I know? I'm just an OG Trekkie who's used to too many great guest characters meeting their deaths never to be heard from again.
3) So when N'Jal speaks, he/she speaks in his language and Uhura translates, but when the landing party speak, he/she is able to understand them? I don't see Uhura translating to him. So I take it he either knows Standard, or the UT is translating one way. Okay... just checking here. I am not quite up on how the UT is supposed to work at this point in the Prime Timeline.
4) Gamble's injury/death happened right around 20mins in...
5) When I was first watching it, I remember thinking that when Dr. M'Benga was examining Gamble's fingers and they looked kinda dark blue/gray/black... that that's not a good thing that his extremities seem to have turned darker. I now realize that meant he had already died by that point. *shivers* the horror/horrific moments on this show were really, SNEAKILY well done.
6) Spock has read Alice in Wonderland... I now want to rewatch Shore Leave LOL.
7) How did an unbroken sentient sphere get into engineering? Who brought it aboard? I must have missed that part.
8) I understand a lot of folks did like the previous episode. I did not. THIS episode is precisely the reason why I did not like that one. To a writer like me, little things can mean a lot. This episode adds to the lore of TOS. It gets Spock back on his perceptive yet logical feet and able to establish a solid, tensile working bond with Christine; it shows why without Christine Chapel's ability to restrain Dr. Korby's innate curiosity for the unknown, he made such a life-changing error. And we now realize that Dr. M'Benga may have had an increasingly difficult emotional journey as the CMO aboard the Enterprise... something that may have led him on to a different path altogether. ALL that is meat & potatoes to an OG Trekkie like me, and though I am still unsure as to whether SNW is Prime Timeline, as the series progresses, I am sure that this particular episode may well be considered part of the stream that seats SNW firmly inside the Prime Timeline.
8) As an OG Phile (original X-Files fan), I always loved the MOTWs (Monster-of-the-week) episodes more and gave them a lot of rewatches over the years. My Trek journey has been very different, but when Trek makes a true horror (and at times horrific) episode, I am there every step of the way.
Grade: 10
Nicely put. 2) I didn't notice but I'd love to know more about what you saw? I liked the moment where Spock asked for her trust scientifically and she backed him over Kobry. You're not that clever Korby! I did feel bad for Spock when he said that he knew he'd lost her confidence on many things. He didn't do anything wrong and I really don't think he ever lost her confidence. I agree that it adds well to TOS. Immortality is clearly important to Korby so this was picked up nicely. Christine is a nice voice of wisdom to Korby but as very successful scientist in a relatively dangerous field I would have thought he had a very strong instinct for risk. I was confused that he was going to blast the door. That's a pretty 101 of what not to do on a dig in a very valuable, ancient site.

I was surprised that they didn't get anything more out of the pairings. They set it up and skipped past it. La'an is obviously very uncomfortable with Christine and pretty outright aggressive. It seemed like a bit of missed opportunity.
I was genuinely confused. Spock merely suggested leaving the building for a moment to report to Pike. But everyone was reacting as if that meant they'd never be able to explore it again.

Perhaps I'd missed something? Worst case scenario, the exploration was just being delayed. Or wasn't?
This made no sense. Just report in! It would take two seconds. At the very least you would want everyone on the ship to know that there's a risk so if you don't come back then they coming look promptly.

Another episode for me with potential but so many negatives.

More Chapel. I dislike her a lot, and she's in everything. She's like a vine weed. Give the rest of the team room to breath and appear and do stuff.

Which leads me to lots of randoms, not enough of the main cast. I don't need them all. especially love interests for Chapel. I don't care. I so so don't care about her romantic dalliances.

I did like that it felt like they were exploring something new, even if it was just an escape room. And I'm curious to what they are setting up.
Aw Chapel's my favourite. I think she shines in every scene almost no matter who she's with. Her love for discovery and science and her joy at doing it captures me. It's very engaging. I appreciate your frustration with the one sided way she's been shown though. She's a great character and short, subtle relationships are more than enough. The heavy focus in Ep2 was too much. It also means that she's always in an awkward moment with someone. The fun, not awkward moments between her and Spock in S1 were the best.

I agree with you about all the other relationships and randoms though. Uhuru and Ortegas's brother would be best left out. The brother hasn't added much for me. I would appreciate the time being dedicated to Ortegas

I think younger folks may not realize how often people watched entertainment programs and saw entertainment updates in the newspaper's TV section back in the day (or how pervasive newspapers even were for that matter, lol). For the latter, it's how most people determined if there was anything worthwhile watching on TV that evening (and not a rerun, etc.), so most people checked that section of the paper daily. For the former, Entertainment Tonight (and shows like it) were usually aired weekdays immediately before prime time network programming, so it wasn't unusual to tune in a bit early (because you watched everything live) and catch the last half of it pretty frequently. I'd say if you were living in the USA and over the age of 10-12 in 1988, you had a pretty good idea she was leaving the show.

Let's also not forget that Denise Crosby was Bing Crosby's granddaughter and had just appeared in Playboy magazine, so there was quite a bit of pop culture interest in her as well, so anything she did was more likely to make news.
I had no idea that Denise Crosby was Bring Croby's granddaughter. That's so cool. Ethan Peck is also Gregory Peck's grandson so they had famous family members working in Hollywood in a similar(ish) time.
Ensign Ded Meet report to the transporter room.
That's perfect! He would need to be wearing a red shirt though.

I liked the Batel and Gambel fight scene. Batel looked non-human with her movements so she sold that. Pelia was funny and somehow it's not a surprise that she loves the camera.

It's not clear to me how the creature knew all the information that the crew didn't tell Gamble. Did I miss that?

The Spock and La'an relationship is feeling like a mess for me. They seem like friends with benefits which is so not Spock. Didn't they establish in Enterprise that Vulcan's are inherently monogamous and stick with a partner largely for life due to the bond? I've never really liked La'an but her added aggression towards everyone (especially Christine) is not helping. I didn't like that 'don't be that woman' exchange. She asked how it was going so I'm not ever sure what La'an was getting at. La'an is too much of a classic security officer for me. Pulling out a phaser at a possibly sentient being was so Worf in the 80s.

That's perfect! He would need to be wearing a red shirt though.
Funnily enough, blue and gold were statistically more likely to die in TOS.
