I never knew that. No one who isn't a Star Trek fan would know who Denise Crosby is where I'm from. And no one younger than my grandparents would ever talk about Bing.Let's also not forget that Denise Crosby was Bing Crosby's granddaughter
I have no idea how popular Bing Crosby was in Ireland. I'm pretty sure I remember the networks reruning his Christmas specials well into the 1980s in the USA, so I'd say most of GenX would have been at least somewhat aware of him, although, probably more as "the Christmas songs guy" than any of his movies or other music.I never knew that. Off topic, but I just saw a video of an American in Europe (she didn't say the country, but it looked like Germany) amazed that cashiers here work sitting down instead of standing like in the US. She found it disrespectful to customers! It's a bit of a stereotype that all American tourists in Europe are shocked that everywhere isn't exactly like the USA and you are not doing much to dispel that.
Most people would know who he is I would think but only in a vague "he was crooner or something" or "my granny liked him".I have no idea how popular Bing Crosby was in Ireland. Those videos are everywhere now and they always just say "Europe" I assume for the click or rage bait.Off topic, but I just saw a video of an American in Europe (she didn't say the country, but it looked like Germany) amazed that cashiers here work sitting down instead of standing like in the US. Absolutely. I'm reasonably sure the average American couldn't care less whether a cashier is standing or sitting (although I don't understand why they make them stand for 8 hours in the US!!!)Those videos are everywhere now and they always just say "Europe" I assume for the click or rage bait.

He would have been long gone from the gossip columns before his granddaughter started getting em out for Playboy (also something I never knew til now)
I am talking when Trek aired in Ireland and the UK. Bing Crosby would have long before stopped being a topic in gossip and entertainment magazines.Again, you're talking now. We're talking 1988. People knew who Bing was (certainly more than Denise at the time) even though he had been dead for ten years. And I gather he was, in fact, also a big deal in the UK. I believe he is considered to be one of the first international stars. He was famous enough that the Germans would listen to him during WWII so he read German language propaganda broadcasts for the Allies.
If you were a 20 something in the 80's you probably knew who he was. Your parents definitely knew. And your grandparents absolutely knew. Certainly in the US. More than likely in the UK.
Denise was in Playboy in the late 70's. Which was vaguely scandalous (and the subject of the gossip columns) because of her famous grandfather. This again became a popular fact when she was cast in Star Trek.
