That was... fine. I definitely think Part 1 is the stronger episode, and like others have said, a fairly strong conclusion up until the last 10 minutes, where everything became very rushed. I think the implication is that this will be the last we see of the Gorn on SNW? If so, that seems like a strange choice, they were an interesting choice for the villains of this season (even if they're far too similar to the Xenomorphs). There were a lot of plot beats pushed into one episode, between hiding from the Gorn, trying to out race the Gorn, trying to lure the Gorn, and then trying to put the Gorn to sleep. I found it somewhat comical how Scotty would begin a sentence saying something was impossible, but ending the sentence with the convoluted steps needed to maybe make it happen.

I also agree that there should be more stakes, but I'm also holding out on there being more long-term repercussions for Ortegas. Given she's one of the few characters we don't know the fate of, I honestly wasn't sure if she would live or die. I thought her losing two of her fingers would be a source of tension, making it difficult for her to pilot the escape ship, but she didn't really seem hampered by that particular ailment. I would be really interesting to see her deal with a injury like that in future episodes -- I really hope they don't just have her be healed and never mention it again.

That being said, I liked all of the different set pieces. The bridge, sick bay, Gorn ship, and to an extent the science lab all got their moment to shine, it just felt like there wasn't enough time to give everyone the attention they're all due. I'm also very curious where all these romances are going. Spock x Chapel seems even more will-they-won't-they than before they got together, and while Batel survived this encounter, given that Pike is fated to spend his days on Talos IV with a character Discovery made a point to explicitly bring into the modern age, I don't like her chances.

It seems strange that 23rd century medicine can presumably regenerate fingers and nerves for Ortegas yet Geordi and Detmer are using implants still centuries later

I’ve never been a fan of using full names for ships. It’s just a mouthful. The USS Picasso would be fine.
“This is the USS Ana Celia de Armas Caso. We come in peace, and—“

“Sorry, we had a drop out there, say again please?”

“This is the USS Ana Celia de Arm—“

“Yeah, sorry, still a lot of static. Could you repeat?”

“…this is the starship Ana Celia de Armas Caso. We—“

“Hang on, just a sec. Seh Lee Ah Deh what again?”

De Armas Caso. Do you have it now?”

“Sure, you’re the Ahnna Selya Duammast, uh, no, Dooammo…”

“Oh, for— This is the de Armas, okay?! The STARSHIP DE AMMAS!”

(“De Armas, sir.”)

DE ARMAS! We COME in PEACE! Okay?!

“…….”

“…….”

“Alien vessel, please say it, don’t spray it…”

So, I know objectively they did a very impressive job hiding Gooding's voluminous new hair, but it was still distractedly noticeable.
For what it’s worth, I thought her new hairstyle was lovely, and much more flattering than her previous cut.

It's still feels like a change to make the Gorn seem like an almost existential threat to the Federation. Fan theories, and now on-screen maps, always seem to imply that they were a relatively minor power. I don't even think the Cardassians were even seen as someone who could fully invade the UFP. Perhaps by "invade" they meant an attack that would eventually be driven off?

Part II was an OK episode. I kept staring at how big Uhuras head got than realized it as a skull cap covering her new hair. Lol. But it's good to know she grew her hair out and it won't be a wig. Gorn put to sleep. Yeah it was a TNG style borg call back.

One thing that really bothered me is not being able to freeze batel. Why not put her in the transporter buffer? Only thing I can think of is they were worried about damage to the ship if the gorn attacked. But still kind of glaring omission.

After two seasons hearing about the gorn I've had enough of them. So I'm glad it's over.

The second episode seems to be more what im looking for now. Will watch that tonight.

Yeah Im choosing to ignore that with the MLK and the Picasso. I cant think of any other examples where theyve done this. Even the pilot just used USS Archer not USS Jonathan Archer.

I'd go 8 or 7. It was fine, definitely another entry in the "second half that isn't as good as the first" list. Some filming choices that I don't think were very good, particularly the stuttering/slow-mo/close ups when they were between the stars. Maybe should've been a three parter with how much they were trying to pack into it.

Glad Batel made it though!

I admit that for a few minutes I thought that was going to be her “leaf on the wind” moment.

I would have been bummed if she had died. I still want a proper Erica Ortegas episode, even though it did seem like they set up some dark paths for the character this season.
