For me It's hard to take McCoy's comment at face value when he's trying to schmooze Carol so hard in that scene even Kirk seemed exasperated.

They never really went anywhere with it, one way or another, but I like the idea in the Kelvinverse Kirk wasn't all that into Marcus.

A lieutenant jg seems to be a bit low on the rank scale to be Chief Engineer of the Enterprise. (After all this isn't the 24th Century. )

Presumably, if he sticks around, he’ll be Pelia’s new right hand man.

Also, starting with the Kelvinverse, I think there’s been a retcon to Scott’s history. In TOS he seemed that he was a few years older than Kirk and Spock, and had a more non-traditional career, spending more time coming up through the ranks. In TOS, while incredibly competent, he wasn’t really the genius miracle worker that the character drifted into being. I think to accommodate all those years of pop culture memory drift, he now needed to be an Academy graduate and his age changed to be more of a Kirk/Spock contemporary.

This is the last picture we see before it cuts to Christine:

Unfortunately, there aren't enough visual clues after to say where she is on the ship. She does seem to wake up in a corridor, and then steps into a room and there's lots of shelves, bins, power connectors. They keep parts of it blurry (likely on purpose), and focus mainly on her as she spots the Enterprise.

The cutoff is just this side of the Bridge dome, which means the whole other side is still somewhat intact.
As a side note it looks like the primary hull has about 12 decks (plus or minus one)

This was great! The Gorn beaming away the survivors was a neat twist! I am curious why the Gorn could/would only do this after the array was destroyed. Their communications and scanners must be distrupted by the array as well? Was this said in the episode?

However, some of the tension was gone in this episode since it's a prequel and we know the fate of a lot of these characters. I might have used redshirts instead of Mbenga and Chapel for the characters in distress.

I think Batel will survive - but I think she will have an arm chopped off. I think she will then make a comment about living her life being disfigured and Pike will reflect on this since he knows his future.

I'm pretty sure by then prosthetics will be commonplace and folks will function normally with somewhat bionic arms and legs.

Regardless, I guess, it just makes sense to have access points for EV suits, considering it's a spaceship, and also that it happens to be white seems to be a general theme for EV suits. I just thought it was funny that someone would find an EV suit being available on a starship to be a convenient thing, rather than something reasonable.

It would be like watching Titanic and saying "oh, how convenient there's a life preserver on the ship for her to find."

Excellent point, maybe the dialogue would run too similar to what happened to Nog - but my gut still tells me that this is an opportunity to talk about being disfigured!

I think its funny how hung up people are on the colony architectural style. I'd like to think by the 23rd century you would no longer be constrainted by "current architecture" which is driven by available construction suppliers and what's cheapest to build under the code.

If I was building a colony I'd make the downtown art deco and the houses Craftsman style, since those are clearly the best architectural styles .

Besides, coming up with excuses to use the backlot is a Trek tradition, one we should be encouraging.

Good episode. Nice to see people doing starshippy things.

Scotty is terrific. My favorite part of the episode is when he meets Pelia. (She's wonderful there too.) Either my ear for accents is going with age or movies and TV have decided they don't have to coddle us anymore. Oh, and I love Scotty's hair. It feel just Doohan enough.

Erica got stuff to do! Yay! We still never got a full on Ortegas episode this season but this was solid.

Nice that they gave Sam a do over.

Spock was being REALLY Spock and I'm so here for it. But wait... He says that the best hope for Batel and Chapel is to disable the damper thing. But he's going to do that by destroying the ship that Chapel was last on? Illogical. But I'm glad it all worked out.

Just when you thought the Gorn couldn't borrow any more from Alien. Heck, they're even doing Alien THREE. OTOH it's a neat trick when you have two characters that we KNOW are going to live for decades more and you're still hiding behind the couch yelling "TURN AROUND!" This is why I'm always annoyed when people complain there are no "stakes".

Jefferies tubes are the answer to everything!

The one thing that really rang false to me was Christine's whole situation on the Cayuga. We needed a better explanation for why she was the sole survivor. Or have some more survivors and she's the only one mobile. I'd have been OK with that.

She wakes up on a mostly destroyed ship and she doesn't look for anyone else who was injured? Then when she gets rescued, I know it's frantic and they're pressed for time, but she meets up with Captain Batel. And sure, we're happy to see Christine. But Batel just lost her whole crew. I think she would be not quite as thrilled to see the series regular. Maybe too much to ask. The only reason I remark on it was that it took me out of the scene a bit even as I was watching it, not when I was thinking after the fact.

I'm not thrilled with the cliffhanger. I mean, it's one thing when you're going to be back in three or four months.

Good episode. Like I said, nice to see rather more standard Star Trek. It can't all be high jinks and musicals.

To quote the good nurse: "I can't believe how much I'll miss this crew!"

The writers didn't completely devastate Cuyahoga by accident.

Gorn is a mix of ID4, Aliens, Jurassic Park, and Trek all rolled into one. Gorn with a space suit is hilarious!

Spock zooming through space reminded me of Michael in Discovery.

Great Scott! What a pleasant surprise. The actor's accent is pretty spot on too. Funny how Pelia knew him too.

What cliffhanger at the end. At least there is a guaranteed Season 3.

I enjoyed this one. I gave it an 8. It had some intense moments. Some action. However, the director didn't quite amp those aspects up enough to be a truly standout episode. Nor did the story have any deeper issues that would raise it to a higher level. So, a good solid episode but not a classic or near classic. At least not based on the part one.

On the planet, there was a lot of potential for the Enterprise crew to have spooky creeping around action trying to avoid the Gorn. But they got to the other survivors pretty quickly and easily. Then the group just hid in the diner. Pike, Batel, and Scotty getting to the shuttle was also fairly easy.

On the destroyed Cayuga, the same with Spock and Chapel. Good potential for spooky creeping around. But it was kind of downplayed.

So, I definitely enjoyed it. But it could've easily been even better. They should've found ways to amp up the tension and action. Missed opportunities there.

Was Chapel truly the only survivor on the Cayuga? If so, that's one hell of a coincidence! I can let that slide because it's TV. Or, is possible there were other survivors? They never really searched. It wasn't possible. But if there were, they went crashing down with the saucer!

I did love the introduction of Scotty!

Not sure why Spock was the only one who could've place the rockets on the wreck?

I'm probably one of the few who like the portrayal of the Gorn in SNW. I have a slight concern about why they're such a large threat in SNW but seemed like new creatures in TOS' Arena. Although, in that episode there are some hints of contact between Starfleet and the Gorn. That's not a deal breaker for me though.

It'll be a long wait to the resolution! Yikes!

Hey, TOS Gorn was relentless, Slow and awkward, but relentless.

Actually the idea of the original Gorn was scary. You can run and hide, but it never tires and will eventually get you!

And the rubber suit was actually a pretty good one for the times.

But I do enjoy the new Gorn. Very nice update!
