Just my opinion. At times watching the gorn episode I felt like i was watching aliens. I had that feeling pretty quick when they entered that base. It was not hard to tell they were giving us an aliens story. The other examples like Balance of Terror I didn't feel like I was watching The Enemy Below regardless of the story.

A fair amount of Star Trek: First Contact is borrowed directly from Aliens. They don’t even try to hide it. It’s not the borrowing that matters. It’s how well something is borrowed.

With the anomaly affecting the whole fleet, it amuses me to think that Bones was probably singing his heart out about being a Doctor, not a broadway star.
Well, Mad Magazine pioneered the Star Trek Musical Episode already in 1976, and...

Not my cup of tea unfortunately this week - which is a shame as I do like a well-done musical. What let it down for me was actually the music - the songs weren't memorable, despite some stellar vocals from the cast. I did appreciate the effort to move along the various character arcs, but I just found I was more interested when the songs weren't happening and that is never a good sign.

Buffy is the gold standard when it comes to musical episodes, and comparisons are inevitable - it really felt to me that Once More With Feeling substantially moved the story forward and was kind of pivotal to that (and the songs were SUPER catchy). This just felt like it will be forgotten by next week, and to me that makes the whole musical thing a bit gimmicky for my taste. This to me very much felt like they went "we're gonna do a musical episode because its a "big swing"" - but actually, it was rather by numbers in execution.

I also just can't quite believe that we're at the finale and it still feels like we've only just gotten started on the season. Something feels missing to me in S2 I can't quite put my finger on - but I totally appreciate I'm in the minority on this one!

First contact felt nothing like aliens. The snw gorn episode felt like we were right back in the aliens world. Just my opinion but it was way to close to the movie.

A relentless and mindless killer species is on the rise, and our main characters are desperate to survive before they are systematically hunted down and subjected to a fate worse than death. The main characters go on a critical mission to the hive of the evil creatures. They must be careful firing their weapons, or they might destroy themselves ("If we begin firing particle weapons in engineering, there's a chance we could hit the warp core"). They sneak into the hive, creeping around unsettling scenery. Suddenly, a character's actions awaken the murderous creatures, and a desperate one-sided battle ensues. Many of the group are lost, but the main characters manage to escape in the nick of time.

One of the main characters is lost, captured by the creatures.

Later, with the clock ticking down toward total destruction, the star of the show decides they must risk everything to go find the lost character before a destructive explosion kills everyone. The character returns to the hive, while everyone else left alive retreats to safety, only to discover that this "hive" is controlled by a powerful and dastardly Queen. The star of the show and the Queen have a final confrontation. The star of the show wins and the missing character is rescued.

The foundational ship-board plot of FC is lifted directly from James Cameron's Aliens, pretty much beat-for-beat. It's the exact same basic plot synopsis...the mindless deadly creatures, the attack on the hive, the lost character the audience cares about, the lone rescue mission, the countdown to destruction, the Queen......

Yeah, about the only thing missing was a scene with Picard emphatically saying:

"Let go of him you Bitch!"
:)

Depending on who you ask, there are really only six, seven or 36 basic story plots in the history of human fiction. The idea that there wouldn't be some overlap in storytelling is a little ridiculous. As was stated above, it all depends on how you tell the story and what you do to make it different. Star Trek is a lot of things but its rarely original and that's okay so long as its entertaining. SNW has been, in my opinion, extremely entertaining.

The events on the Enterprise are lifted from ALIENS, I agree.

But not Earth and Cochrane.
Yeah. That was a rehash of the McCoy/Scotty bit from STIV: TVH where they give the formula for Transparent Aluminium to the head of a Plexiglass manufacturing plant in exchange for enough Plexiglass to do the job.

The major differences?

- Geordie and the crew KNEW "he did invent the thng..."

- Geordi also supplemented Cochrane's 21st century engineering tech with some 24th century engineering materials and techniques, PLUS Geordie was the one who created the intermixed chamber used from memory; and when he asked Cochrane, "Did I get it right?", Cochrane replied, "Yeah, I'm sure you did..." without really looking at Geordie's schematic.:guffaw:

So yeah, for all we know (like Scotty imparting rhw Transparent Aluminium formula to the Plexiglass manufacturer); Geordie was the one who ACTUALLY ultimately invented a working Warp Engine.  :wtf:

B.
There's something to be said that at the end of "This Side of Paradise(TOS)" a 37-year-old Spock who's second-in-command of the most famous ship in the Federation says that for the first time he'd just experienced happiness. Real happiness.

That's his lot. And it may get easier as he gets older and more wise and embraces more of his human half, but it never gets easy.

Perhaps the best Spock quote ever. Truly summarizes the character.

Cutting and pasting from GTD... because why the Hell not?

Spoilers - The Bastardization of Star Trek | Page 7 | The Trek BBS

I haven't seen it yet. I'll see it soon. If anything, just so my brother stops asking me if I've seen it and what I think.

Last week was both a busy week and a bad week for me, IRL. I was just flat-out not in the mood. And I deeply suspect this is the type of episode I'd have to be in the mood for.

It's going to go one of four ways:
1. I'll think it's great and I'll love it.
2. I'll think it's horrible and I'll still love it.
3. I'll think it's not bad, but it isn't for me.
4. I'll think it's a flat-out horrible cringe-fest.

No idea where I'll land.
Definitely would be interested in seeing your thoughts on that episode's thread. I know that in the Saturday chat, another person didn't particularly like it (for reasons that I can understand) and he really likes musicals. I hate musicals... it's just not my genre.

I found it interesting that two people who have completely opposing views about musicals agree on not liking it. By the same token, I've seen people who don't like musicals really love it. So I can't even say that if you like musicals, you'll likely like this one.

Either way, if/when you do watch it, please share your thoughts on that thread.
I was actually thinking of DMing you to see what you think, just ‘cause sometimes I’ve asked you stuff before, it’s opened a can of worms and you’ve told me next time I should DM you instead.

Like Farscape, I’ll be interested to hear what you think.

I've done it. I've watched part of it. Most of it. Have to get ready for work. Will finish the rest of it later.

But what did I think of the episode? I'm Lord Garth. A lot of it's not my type of music, but I used to be in chorus when I was in school. And...

I know what the mods are thinking now about spoilers
The mods are thinking, "My Gods!"
But I used to be like you
I had the same position as you
In the same forum as you
And I was thinking what was I going to do?

So I'll respect the decorum
And take my thoughts to the right forum
When I have time to post my opinion tonight
And I'm sure it won't start an internet fight

People asked what did I think
Probably a good thing this thread had some drinks!

I dunno. Like Uhura, I have had several ear worms from it all week. I watched the episode only twice, but then downloaded the soundtrack album and was surprised that I could have easily sung along. (If I could sing, that is.)
Indeed. The music has stayed with me since I watched it. I have the soundtrack, I've replayed the episode repeatedly. Put it this way, when you're listening to "Keeping Secrets" in the car, and you start to tear up because you identify so strongly with what Una is saying, that sounds like a resounding success to me.

Just brilliant all around. I love this episode, I love this crew, and I love this show.

I'm feeling blue that this is the penultimate episode. That the season was so full and too short. That we won't see what happens to these people for two years at least after Hegemony, and I'm pissed off at the AMPTP for not being able to get shit done with their corporate overloads/shareholders so as to negotiate in good faith with the people who create the entertainment they make all their money off of.

The thought of Reality TV and Politics being the primary viewing options for US audiences in the foreseeable future fills me with dread.
