You mean the strike, specifically? I don’t know enough about the particulars to discuss it, anyway. I always presumed all these people get handsomely compensated, considering how much money gets thrown around in production.
Contrary to popular belief, they don't. Most of the working actors and writers spend a lot of time chasing down jobs. Many hold down other jobs besides. And since streaming services the residuals that used to keep them afloat have gone away. They're not all the children of famous actors or producers or directors with income streams from trust funds. :D

I believe recently Connor Trinneer said what they're fighting for is a "Middle Class existence". The idea that every actor gets paid like Clooney or Cruise is absurd. Most don't even pull down what the actors playing secondary characters on SNW or PIC get.

And even if you're lucky enough to land to a steady role on a series once in a while, those paychecks have to hold you over during the long drought between gigs. Heck, how many Star Trek cast members (aside from Shatner or Patrick Stewart or whomever) have had big acting careers after their respective shows wound down? A few, like Jonathan Frakes, manage to segue into directing, but for most supporting actors? After your TV show gets cancelled, you're back to auditioning again -- maybe for a guest-spot on a cop show or a supporting role in a Hallmark movie or whatever.

And in the meantime, you still have bills to pay, maybe families to support.

Or so I gather.

Lord knows the average person thinks writers make way more money than we actually do, so I can sympathize.

For all the stick we give Anthony Montgomery and all the jokes we make at the expense of Travis from ENT and how he was ignored by the writers and producers it's very heartwarming to see that he's one of the two busiest actors from that series along with Scott Bakula, having managed to spin from the Trek world into a steady career in a daytime soap opera (for which he's received award nominations) and African-American films and maintaining a consistent work record in the industry for most of the period since ENT's cancellation in 2005.

He's even tried to spin off his acclaimed graphic novel into an animated series and made a lot of headway in the effort. So maybe only the Shatners and Stewarts can get the big paydays and global recognition outside of Trek but hey, Anthony Montgomery shows that sometimes the good guys do finish first.

But the potential for a 2+ year break certainly make me think season 3 will be this shows last.
It is (of late) one of their offerings that is creating a lot of critical buzz (and that helps get free promotion for the P+ service.

So unless there's a shift where Paramount decides to ditch Streaming entirely post Strike(s); IF they produce SNW S3, at worst they'll wait until they see if 'Buzz' continues and 'minutes viewed' maintains, they'll okay a S4.

If they continue with Streaming, I DON'T see them axing anything Yellowstone related or SNW itself which will be they're only live action Star Trek series post Strike until they get the Stafleet Academy series production running.

Honestly, I think we're going to season four minimum.

The first two seasons were pretty much filmed back to back, and it doesn't seem too unrealistic to assume they planned for the same here.

Didn't Picard S2-S3 do the same? A lot of it is presumably down to scheduling so they can get out a season each year which is becoming harder and harder.

But yeah, maybe it's just hopeful thinking but with Star Trek moving towards it I'm going to assume a season four is the minimum we're working up to.

I can't see them not doing two more seasons at least, unless somehow S3 winds up hackneyed to the point of torpedoing everything the way TOS season 3 unfortunately did. That's not to say there aren't some great episodes in TOS S3 - merely that the deck was stacked against it and the show was already lucky to be getting a third season by that point, even in the Friday Night Death Slot. Luckily it seems that, if anything, momentum is picking up for Strange New Worlds in the mainstream - the show could be something people discover throughout the strike because nothing else is on, even if they have no prior interest in Star Trek. Didn't that happen with Voyager over the pandemic?

Originally, PICARD S1 and S2 were planned to be filmed back to back, but then the COVID-19 lockdowns hit right before they were about to start, so when production started up again, the made the decision to instead film S2 & S3 back to back.
(The story goes they wrapped PICARD S2 on a Friday and they were all back starting on S3 the following Monday.)

SNW S1 & S2 were greenlight at the same time; but there was about a one month break between the time they wrapped S1 and started production on S2, so it wasn't quite "Back to Back".

Don't have the energy to do the post I'm going to do. Have to be at peak inspiration to do an entirely musical post.

But I want to get this one thought out there in the meantime. This has probably been mentioned already, but I'm going to weigh in on it anyway. After Carol tells Kirk to stay away, I (and probably a lot of other people!) think Kirk and La'an are going to become an item.

Nope...take a look a TOS S1 Court Martial, and you'll see who Kirk shagged on the rebound... ;)

Her name was Areel Shaw

According to Memory Alpha, that's in 2262 (four years before "Court Martial" I'm guessing). SNW is currently in 2259/2260. If David's born in 2260/2261, there's still time for Kirk/La'an to happen.

It's a tight fit (that's what he said!), but it's still doable (that's what she said!).

Initial rating: 11.
Minus one for the awkward scene with La'an and Kirk.
So... still a 10.

If not for that one scene, this one would have knocked "The Visitor" off its pedestal, and bumped "The Inner Light" to bronze.

Maybe I'm just prejudiced because I did musical theater for so long.

"4 years, 5 months, and an odd number of days..."
^^^
From the time of Court Martial, that's when Kirk broke it off. One has to think they were together for some time before he broke it off.

Honestly, I think we're going to season four minimum.

The first two seasons were pretty much filmed back to back,

I'm afraid you're mistaken. Filming on SNW Season One began in February 2021; principal photography ended in July 2021, with some additional pickups in October 2021. Filming in Season Two began in February 2022 and ended in July 2022.

Didn't Picard S2-S3 do the same?

I think that's what you're thinking of. Filming on PIC Season Three began immediately after filming on Season Two ended.

Originally, PICARD S1 and S2 were planned to be filmed back to back, but then the COVID-19 lockdowns hit right before they were about to start, so when production started up again, the made the decision to instead film S2 & S3 back to back.

I'm afraid you are fundamentally misremembering the timeline of PIC release dates vs. COVID.

PIC Season One began filming in April 2019 and ended in early September 2019. PIC Season One premiered on 23 January 2020; then-U.S. President Donald Trump declared a public health emergency because of COVID on 31 January 2020; a national emergency was declared on 13 March 2020; and the PIC Season One finale, "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part II" was released on 26 March 2020.

The production of PIC Season Two was delayed as a result of the pandemic, and the decision was made to film Seasons Two and Three back to back. Principal photography on Season Two began on 16 February 2021, more than a year after PIC Season One was released, and ended in early September 2021 (almost two years to the day after filming on Season One ended). Filming on Season Three began immediately afterwards, lasting from September 2021 to March 2022. Season Two premiered that same month, and concluded in May 2022; Season Three premiered in February 2023 and concluded in April 2023.

(It is worth noting that filming began on Season Two before COVID-19 vaccines were widely available. Most people hadn't received their shots until the spring of 2021, whereas filming began in late winter. That's part of why the cast's stories kept them physically separated for so much of the season -- the cast was being kept in separate "pods" as a precaution against the spread of COVID in a time before the vaccine was available.)

SNW S1 & S2 were greenlight at the same time; but there was about a one month break between the time they wrapped S1 and started production on S2, so it wasn't quite "Back to Back".

Not counting additional photography, there were seven months between the end of filming on SNW Season One and the start of filming on Season Two.
